Chapter 15 - The Toast

|
At exactly ten o'clock, the string quartet faded their music into a soft, elegant silence.
Richard stepped up onto the small raised dais at the front of the ballroom. He tapped his crystal champagne flute with a silver spoon. The sharp, clear ringing sound instantly commanded the attention of the massive room.
Two hundred faces turned toward him.
Eleanor stood front and center, her eyes shining with greedy anticipation. She clutched her hands together, waiting for the announcement that would make her a billionaire. Julian stood a few feet behind her, a smug, relaxed smile on his face.
"Ladies and gentlemen, friends, distinguished guests," Richard began, his voice echoing perfectly through the acoustics of the grand room. "Thank you all for being here tonight to celebrate this momentous occasion."
Polite applause rippled through the crowd.
"They say that finding a partner is about finding someone you can trust completely," Richard continued, his tone smooth, almost hypnotic. "Someone who sees you in the dark. Someone who cares for the things you hold most dear when you aren't looking."
Eleanor beamed, looking around at the wealthy women who were staring at her with blatant envy.
"Trust is a rare commodity in my world," Richard said, his voice dropping slightly, losing the jovial edge and becoming something heavier, something far more dangerous. "People often wonder what powerful men do behind closed doors. But the real question is... what do people do in the dark when they think powerful men aren't looking?"
The crowd shifted uncomfortably. The tone of the toast was changing rapidly. The politicians exchanged confused glances.
Eleanor’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second, a flicker of genuine confusion crossing her beautiful features.
"Tonight, I wanted to honor my beautiful fiancée," Richard announced, gesturing gracefully toward Eleanor. "I wanted to show all of you exactly who she is, and exactly what she has brought into my home."
