Chapter 12 - The Quiet Replacement

|
Two days before the grand gala, Richard executed the most critical phase of his plan with absolute, terrifying silence.
Eleanor had insisted on hiring a prestigious, external catering and hospitality staff for the event, wanting to impress the high-society guests. She had personally vetted the agency, ensuring they were pliable and easy to bully.
At 3:00 a.m. on Friday, Richard's men intercepted the agency's management. A massive sum of cash exchanged hands, accompanied by a very polite, very lethal threat. The legitimate agency was paid to stay home.
By sunrise, the entire household and event staff had been systematically replaced.
The men and women pouring the coffee, arranging the flowers, and setting the silver on the tables were not trained hospitality workers. They were soldiers. They were Richard's most loyal, hardened men and women from the old neighborhood, dressed in immaculate white catering uniforms and crisp black suits.
They knew how to pour vintage wine, but more importantly, they knew how to lock a perimeter, sweep a room for weapons, and follow orders without asking a single question.
Eleanor, completely consumed by her own vanity and the impending illusion of the trust transfer, noticed absolutely nothing.
"The new waitstaff seems a bit stiff, don't you think?" Eleanor remarked casually over lunch, waving her fork at a massive, heavily tattooed man serving water.
"They are professionals, darling," Richard replied smoothly, cutting his steak. "I told them to maintain absolute discipline for the event. I want everything to go exactly according to plan."
"Well, they certainly listen," she preened, taking a sip of wine.
Richard smiled across the table.
Meanwhile, deep in the secure east wing of the estate, Sophie was completely isolated from the chaos. Richard had quietly brought Maria back into the house through a private entrance. The former nanny was terrified but fiercely protective, refusing to leave the child's side.

"Keep the steel doors locked from the inside," Richard had instructed Maria, kissing his daughter's forehead. "Marcus will be stationed in the hallway. No matter what you hear from the ballroom tonight, do not open this door."
The board was set. The pieces were moving. The trap was ready to spring.
