Chapter 13 - The Boys Learned the Whole Truth

At ten, sons asked directly why we divorced.
We had prepared with therapist.
No villain story.
No lie.
Gabriel said, “I betrayed your mother’s trust.”
Ethan frowned.
“How?”
“I kissed someone else.”
Noah looked horrified.
“Serena?”
“Yes.”
Miles said, “That’s dumb.”
“Extremely.”
I continued.
“He was also afraid bad people would hurt me, so he decided divorce would protect me.”
Ethan: “Also dumb.”
Gabriel: “Very.”
“And I didn’t tell him pregnancy.”
Noah looked at me.
“Also dumb?”
I smiled sadly.
“Yes.”
Three boys considered.
Miles concluded:
“So whole family happened because adults were dumb.”
Accurate.
We laughed.
Then Ethan asked, “Do you forgive Dad?”
I looked at Gabriel.
“Forgiveness isn’t pretending it didn’t happen. I forgave enough to build something new.”
Gabriel nodded.
“That’s more than I deserved.”
Noah groaned.
