Chapter 10 - The Letter Gabriel Never Sent

During demolition of burned estate, workers found safe in study wall.
Inside old passports, family ledgers, jewelry, and sealed envelope addressed:
CLAIRE
Date: week of divorce.
Gabriel had never sent.
He refused open without me.
We sat at table.
I unfolded.
Claire,
If I do this correctly, you will hate me.
I hope hate keeps you away long enough for me to destroy people watching you.
Serena is part mistake and part strategy. The kiss was mine. I will not blame danger for my weakness.
Arthur threatened your life today.
I could tell you, but then you would stay because that is who you are.
So I’m choosing for you.
I know you will never forgive that.
I love you.
Maybe love is sometimes leaving.
—G.
I cried.
Then got angry.
“This is infuriating.”
“I know.”
“You wrote perfect confession and hid in wall?”
“I didn’t intend hiding. I couldn’t send.”
“Because?”
“It would reveal everything.”
“You were such idiot.”
“Yes.”
I laughed through tears.
“Stop agreeing.”
“No.”
I hit shoulder—not injured one.
He smiled.
Then serious.
“I believed love justified control.”
“It doesn’t.”
“I know now.”
“Good.”
We sat long time.
He reached toward hand, stopped.
I closed distance.
Held it.
