Chapter 8 - Shaking the Family Tree

The arrest of Marianne Harrington sent shockwaves through high society. The wealthy matriarch was photographed in handcuffs, her face covered by a silk scarf as FBI agents carried boxes of evidence out of her multi-million-dollar mansion.

I spent the next two days working alongside the federal prosecution team. With my background in forensic accounting, I was able to translate the mountain of financial data into a clear, undeniable timeline of greed and attempted murder.

I showed them how Marianne had systematically looted Emma’s trust fund over the years to fund her own lavish lifestyle. Emma’s sudden decision to audit her own inheritance had triggered the murder plot. Marianne knew that if Emma looked too closely at the books, Marianne would go to prison for embezzlement.

So, she decided to kill her daughter to cover her own theft.

I sat in the prosecutor’s office, presenting the final flowcharts.

“It’s beautiful work, Nathan,” the lead federal prosecutor, Sarah Jenkins, said, shaking her head. “You’ve given us an airtight case. They have absolutely no room to move. We’re offering Darren a plea deal to testify against his mother, and he’s already cracking.”

“I don’t want a plea deal,” I said, my voice cold. “I want them to face the maximum sentence. No country clubs. No early parole.”

“With this evidence? They’re going away for a very, very long time,” Sarah promised.

I closed my laptop and stood up. For the first time in a week, the heavy, suffocating weight on my chest began to lift. The financial monster had been slain. Now, I could go back to being a husband.
