Chapter 7 - The Confrontation in the Shadows

Darren dropped the syringe. It clattered against the linoleum floor, the liquid spilling out.
I stepped out from behind the curtain, my hands in my pockets. Beside me, Detective Ramirez and three armed officers emerged from the bathroom, their weapons drawn and aimed directly at Darren’s chest.
“Hands where we can see them, Darren!” Marcus barked.
Darren stumbled back against the bed, his face twisted in a mixture of rage and panic. He ripped off his surgical mask. “This is a setup! You can't prove anything! I was just... I was just checking on my sister!”
“With a syringe of potassium chloride?” I asked, stepping forward and pointing to the floor. “We’ve already secured the syringe, Darren. And the entire room is wired with high-definition cameras. We have you on video admitting to the crime.”
“You think you’re so smart, Nate?” Darren sneered, his voice shaking. “You’re just a pathetic pen-pusher. My mother has the best lawyers in the state. We’ll be out of jail before the morning.”
“Actually, your mother is currently being arrested at her estate,” Marcus said, pulling out a pair of handcuffs. “Federal agents just executed a warrant on her home and office. We found the offshore wire transfers, the forged insurance policy, and the communications with Dr. Vance.”
Darren looked like a cornered animal. He lunged toward the door, but Marcus caught him, slamming him against the wall and clicking the metal cuffs around his wrists.

As they dragged him out of the room, he looked at me, his eyes filled with pure hatred. “You ruined us, Nate! You ruined this family!”
“No, Darren,” I said quietly, watching him get wheeled away. “You ruined yourselves the second you touched my wife.”
