Chapter 4 - Shadows in the Family TrustThe revelation hung in the cool night air like a toxic cloud. I looked across the illuminated driveway toward the back of a state police cruiser, where Laura sat in handcuffs, staring blankly at the dashboard.

For years, I had tolerated Laura’s coldness, her vanity, and her endless ambition. When we divorced twelve years ago, I walked away from the family home without asking for a single dime, leaving her with a generous settlement just to ensure Emily would have a peaceful, stable childhood. I had intentionally kept my immense wealth hidden from Laura, knowing that her insatiable greed would only invite chaos into Emily’s life.
Now, that same greed had driven her to sell out her own flesh and blood.
I walked over to the police cruiser and motioned for the officer to roll down the rear window. Laura looked up, her eyes puffy, her red hair wild and unkempt.
“Daniel...” she sobbed, pressing her hand against the glass. “You have to tell them to let me go! I’m Emily’s mother! I was only doing what Victor said was best for her medical treatment! He told me she was sick!”
“Stop lying, Laura,” I said, my voice dangerously quiet. “The FBI recovered the wire transfers from Richard’s firm. You took a two-million-dollar advance payment last month in exchange for signing the mental incompetency petition.”
Laura’s face instantly changed. The pathetic, tearful act melted away, replaced by a bitter, vicious sneer that exposed the ugliness underneath.
“She didn't deserve that money!” Laura spat, her voice dropping into an ugly, hissed whisper. “My father left everything to her—a ungrateful girl who barely visited him in the nursing home! What about me? I spent my entire life pretending to care about his stupid business! Victor promised me we would move to Europe once the funds cleared! I deserved that money, Daniel!”
I stared at the woman I had once loved, feeling nothing but profound disgust.
“You gave up your right to be a mother the moment you let him put ropes on her wrists,” I said. “You’re going to prison, Laura. And when you get out, you won't have a single cent, a single home, or a daughter.”
I turned to the officer. “Roll up the window.”
As the cruiser pulled away, Marcus walked up beside me, handing me a fresh cup of coffee. “Boss, we’ve got a situation developing downtown. Richard just got word that Victor’s estate was raided. His legal team is currently attempting to wipe the servers at his private equity firm, Apex Capital.”

I took a slow sip of the hot coffee, watching the red taillights of Laura’s police car disappear down the dark country road.
“Tell our cyber division to execute a full remote lock on Apex Capital’s infrastructure,” I ordered. “And call Federal Prosecutor Vance. Tell him I’m coming downtown, and I’m bringing every piece of digital evidence we’ve gathered over the last five years.”
