The Steel Lock / Chapter 3 / 10

Chapter 3 - The Forensic Paper TrailTwo hours later, the chaotic scene at the estate had transitioned into a high-level crime scene investigation. Bright floodlights illuminated the darkened warehouse while forensic technicians in white suits meticulously cataloged every drop of blood, every piece of rope, and every discarded document scattered across the concrete.

Emily sat in the back of an advanced mobile medical unit parked in the driveway, wrapped in a thick wool blanket. An IV line ran into her arm, administering fluids and pain medication. I sat beside her, holding her cold, bruised hand while a paramedic gently applied a butterfly bandage to the cut above her lip.

“Drink this, sweetie,” I said, handing her a bottle of water.

She took a slow sip, her hands trembling slightly before she leaned her head against my shoulder. “I thought you were never coming, Pop. When Victor took my phone three weeks ago, he forced me to record those voice notes... he threatened to hurt you if I didn't cooperate.”

A cold flame ignited in my chest, but I kept my composure for her sake. “I knew it wasn't you the second I got that text message, Em. You haven't called me 'Dad' since you were seven years old. The moment I saw that word on my screen, I knew someone was holding a gun to your head.”

Marcus approached the back of the ambulance, holding a clear plastic evidence bag containing a charred stack of papers retrieved from Victor’s study fireplace.

“Boss,” Marcus said, lowering his voice so the paramedics wouldn't hear. “We recovered the partial remains of the original trust ledger. Victor was burning the evidence the moment he heard your truck pull onto the gravel.”

“Did we get the signatures?” I asked.

“Our forensic imaging team managed to scan the unburned sections using infrared camera rigs,” Marcus replied, handing me a digital printout. “The signatures Victor claimed Emily signed were crude forgeries executed by an outside notary named Arthur Pendelton. We just picked Pendelton up at his office downtown. He spilled everything within five minutes of seeing the federal badge.”

I examined the printouts. The documents revealed a dark, calculated plot that had been set in motion over eighteen months ago. When Emily’s grandfather—my former father-in-law, a honorable real estate tycoon—passed away, he left his entire seventy-million-dollar portfolio in a revocable trust specifically designated for Emily, with strict clauses preventing Laura or any future spouse from touching the principal.

Victor, whose logistics company was secretly drowning in forty million dollars of illegal debt owed to a dangerous regional syndicate, had married Laura specifically to get close to that money. When he realized Emily wouldn't willingly surrender her inheritance, he orchestrated her gradual isolation, telling her friends she had moved abroad while holding her captive in the estate’s abandoned maintenance facility.

Agent Reyes walked up to the ambulance, holding a secure digital tablet.

“Daniel,” Reyes said, her expression grave. “We just finished searching Victor’s private safe behind the study bookshelf. We found something else you need to see.”

I carefully stepped out of the ambulance, keeping one eye on Emily. “What is it?”

Reyes swiped through a series of high-resolution photographs on her screen. “Victor wasn't working alone. The bank transfers funding his holding accounts weren't just coming from shell companies. They were being cleared through a private equity firm owned by Laura’s brother, Richard.”

I froze, my jaw clenching tightly. “Richard?”

“Yes,” Reyes confirmed. “Your ex-wife wasn't just a passive bystander, Daniel. She signed the initial guardianship transfer forms two months ago, declaring Emily mentally unfit. Laura wasn't being manipulated by Victor. She was his co-conspirator.”
