Chapter 3 - Lines Cross in the DarkThat night changed everything between us.

Nothing physical happened in that kitchen—we were both too aware of Ryan sleeping thirty feet away—but the unspoken barrier had been completely destroyed. From that night on, the glances we exchanged across the room held a secret weight.
Over the next month, I found excuses to visit Ryan's house more often. But if I was being honest with myself, I wasn't coming for the video games anymore. I was coming for the moments when Ryan stepped out of the room, leaving Julia and me alone.
We texted in secret. Simple messages at first—asking about each other's day, sharing jokes—but quickly escalating into late-night conversations that kept me awake until sunrise.
I learned about her past. Julia had married young, to a man who had left her when Ryan was only five years old. She had spent fifteen years putting her entire life on hold, sacrificing her youth, her ambitions, and her own happiness to raise her son alone.
"I forgot what it felt like to be looked at as a woman," she admitted to me late one Tuesday afternoon while Ryan was at work. I had driven over under the pretense of borrowing a tool. "Not as a mother. Not as an employee. Just... a woman."
"You're an extraordinary woman, Julia," I said, stepping into the hallway where she stood.
She looked up at me, her eyes soft and searching. "This is dangerous, Ethan. If Ryan finds out..."
"I know," I said, taking a step closer, my hand reaching out to softly touch her waist. "I know it is."
She leaned into my touch with a heavy, shuddering sigh. "I shouldn't let you do this."

"Tell me to stop, and I will," I whispered, my heart racing.
Julia didn't tell me to stop. Instead, she reached up, wrapped her fingers into the hair at the back of my neck, and pulled me down into a breathless, lingering kiss.
