Chapter 2 - Late Night WhispersA few weeks after that infamous dinner, Ryan invited me to stay over for the weekend. We were planning an all-night gaming marathon and fixing up a few broken laptops Ryan had bought cheap online.

By midnight, Ryan was sound asleep on the couch downstairs, his controller slipping from his fingers, snoring softly.
I couldn't sleep. The air in the living room felt stuffy, so I quietly stood up, picked up my empty ceramic mug, and walked toward the kitchen to grab a glass of water.
The house was quiet, bathed in the soft amber glow of nightlights. But as I approached the kitchen doorway, I froze.
Julia was there.
The overhead cabinet light cast a warm, golden glow across the small kitchen. She was standing near the stove in a delicate red lace lingerie set, her sleek blonde hair pinned up into a high bun. She was adjusting the stove dial, completely oblivious to my presence at first.
My breath caught in my throat. I stood anchored to the floor in the dark doorway, my hand holding the mug so tightly my knuckles turned white.
She turned slightly, sensing movement, and her eyes met mine.
She didn't scream. She didn't rush to cover herself. Instead, she let out a soft, breathy laugh that sent a shiver down my spine.
"Ethan... I didn't know you were still awake," she whispered, her voice velvety and low in the quiet house.
"I... I couldn't sleep," I stumbled over my words, my pulse pounding against my ribs like a hammer. "I came to get water. I'm sorry—I'll go back."
"Don't go," she said softly, stepping closer to the counter edge. Her gray-blue eyes held mine with a dangerous intensity. "You don't have to run away every time we're in the same room."
"Julia, Ryan is sleeping right in the next room," I warned in a low breath, though my feet refused to step back.
"I know," she murmured, leaning slightly against the counter. A subtle, mischievous smile touched her lips. "Did you mean what you said about me that first day, Ethan?"

The air between us charged with raw, undeniable electricity. The boundary between a friend's mother and a woman who captivated every thought in my head dissolved completely in the dim kitchen light.
"Every word," I whispered back, stepping out of the shadows.
