Chapter 7 - The Grand Jury IndictmentThe formal arraignment at the County Superior Courthouse on Tuesday morning was a media circus.

Dozens of news crews, photojournalists, and legal reporters mobbed the stone steps outside the building. The story of a high-profile corporate lawyer caught on his own home's hidden security camera burning his wife’s hand had captivated the entire nation.

I walked up the courthouse steps with my head held high, flanked by Evelyn Reed and Detective Vega.

Inside Courtroom 4B, Daniel, Linda, and Harold were brought in through the side entrance in heavy wrist and ankle chains.

Without his five-thousand-dollar suits, expensive hair product, and arrogant posture, Daniel looked hollow, pale, and terrified. His mother, Linda, was weeping hysterically into a tissue, while Harold sat rigidly staring at the floor, his legal reputation completely destroyed.

Their high-priced defense attorney, Richard Vance—Daniel’s uncle—stood at the podium, trying desperately to argue for pre-trial release.

“Your Honor!” Richard shouted, projecting an air of aristocratic indignation. “My clients are respected civic leaders with zero prior criminal records! The media circus surrounding this case has corrupted the public narrative! We request immediate release on a personal recognizance bond!”

The presiding judge, the Honorable Judge Catherine Blake—a formidable jurist known for her zero-tolerance stance on domestic violence—looked down from the bench with icy contempt.

“Mr. Vance,” Judge Blake said, her voice echoing clearly through the silent courtroom. “I have personally reviewed the live-streamed video evidence submitted by the prosecution. What I witnessed on that recording was not a ‘domestic misunderstanding.’ It was a sadistic, pre-meditated act of felony assault, accompanied by depraved indifference from the co-defendants.”

She picked up her heavy wooden gavel.

“The grand jury has returned a true bill on all counts,” Judge Blake announced forcefully. “Daniel Vance is indicted on First-Degree Aggravated Assault, Felony Domestic Violence, and Witness Intimidation. Linda and Harold Vance are indicted on Accessory to Felony Assault and Failure to Render Aid.”

Richard Vance stammered, “Your Honor, surely bail can be set—”

“Bail is denied in its entirety!” Judge Blake ruled, striking her gavel with a thunderous crack. “The defendants will remain in state custody pending trial! Court is adjourned!”

BANG!

Daniel collapsed against the defense table, sobbing hysterically as state troopers grabbed him by his orange jumpsuit and dragged him toward the holding cell. He turned his head frantically toward me, screaming through his tears:

“Clara! Please! I’m sorry! I’ll give you the house! I’ll give you everything! Just drop the charges!”

I stood quietly in the gallery, holding my bandaged hand against my chest, watching him being hauled away into the dark holding corridor.

I didn't utter a single word. My silence was the final sentence he had earned.
