THE SILENT STREAM / Chapter 4 / 10

Chapter 4 - The Arrest on Live VideoDetective Vega didn't hesitate. She pushed past Daniel, her squad following in crisp tactical formation, entering the kitchen within three seconds.

The moment Vega saw me collapsed on the tile, holding my severely scorched hand, her eyes hardened into steel.

“Paramedics! Get the rig up the driveway now!” Vega ordered into her shoulder radio.

Two officers knelt beside me immediately. One opened a medical trauma kit, applying a sterile cool dressing gently over my raw, blistering skin, while the other began taking high-resolution forensic photographs of my injuries.

Linda stood by the dining table, her face bright red with indignation. “What is the meaning of this outrage?! How dare you break into a private residence without a warrant! My husband is a retired superior court magistrate!”

Detective Vega turned to face Linda, pulling a rugged tablet from her tactical belt.

“We don't need a warrant for an active felony in progress, ma'am,” Vega said, her voice dripping with ice. “Especially not when we’ve been watching the entire assault live on a secure police feed for the last seven minutes.”

Daniel’s face drained of every drop of color. His mouth opened, but no sound came out. “Live... live feed?”

Vega rotated her tablet toward Daniel.

Displayed on the screen in high definition was the exact video shot from behind the spice rack: Daniel slamming my hand onto the stove coil, Linda stepping over me to get wine, Harold turning up the TV, and Daniel squeezing my burnt flesh while threatening me.

The audio played loudly in the silent kitchen: “You are nothing, Clara... You belong to me.”

Harold stepped into the kitchen, his face pale and trembling. “That... that’s an illegal wiretap! That video is inadmissible in court!”

“It’s a lawful security recording installed by the sole owner of the property,” Vega countered smoothly, pulling a set of heavy steel handcuffs from her belt. “And Mr. Vance, your son is under arrest.”

Two officers grabbed Daniel by his arms, twisting them behind his back.

“Get off me!” Daniel shrieked, panicking, his polished image completely disintegrating into sniveling terror. “Clara! Tell them it was an accident! Tell them you tripped! Clara, please!”

I sat on the floor as the paramedics gently lifted me onto a gurney. I looked Daniel straight in his eyes, my voice steady and completely devoid of fear for the first time in three years.

“I spent six years prosecuting men like you, Daniel,” I said softly as the pain medication began to take hold. “I know exactly how admissible this video is.”

Linda began screaming curses as two more officers stepped up behind her and Harold, informing them that they were being detained as accessories to felony assault and witness intimidation.

As the paramedics wheeled my gurney out through the front door into the cool night air, the sirens blared across the quiet suburban street, announcing to the entire neighborhood that the nightmare was finally over.
