Chapter 4 - The Shadow in the VaultWith Grant and Richard Vance behind bars, the board voted unanimously to appoint me as interim Chief Executive Officer. My first decree was to grant Mara full, unrestricted access to every digital vault, paper archive, and hidden ledger in Cole Development’s history.

For three days, we practically lived in the executive suite. While I worked to reassure panicked investors and stabilize ongoing construction projects, Mara spent fourteen hours a day systematically unravelling four years of systematic fraud.

On Thursday night, as rain rattled against the high-rise windows, Mara called me into the sub-basement archive room.

The air smelled of old paper and dust. Stacked on a metal table were dozens of black leather-bound ledgers dating back to before my father’s death five years ago.

“Look at this, Ethan,” Mara said, pointing her magnifying glass at a series of signatures on a 2021 land acquisition document.

I leaned over her shoulder. The signature at the bottom read Thomas Cole—my father’s name. But beside it was a secondary trustee stamp belonging to my mother, Diane.

“My dad bought that parcel of land six months before he passed away,” I said, frowning. “It was supposed to be a nature reserve.”

“That’s what he intended,” Mara said, swiping her tablet to show a secondary set of bank records. “But the month after your father died, your mother and Grant altered the land deed. They re-zoned the soil, ignored environmental contamination reports, and built the Oakridge Residential Complex right on top of toxic industrial runoff.”

My breath caught in my throat. “Oakridge? There are two hundred families living there!”

“They saved fifteen million dollars by skipping the soil remediation process,” Mara said, her eyes dark with outrage. “And to make sure no one ever audited the land records, Grant paid off the county inspector using funds taken from your architectural firm.”

The horror of what my family had done settled heavy in my chest. This wasn't just corporate embezzlement—this was a catastrophic endangerment of human lives. Grant and my mother had systematically corrupted everything my father had built, using my name as a shield to protect themselves.

“Why didn't my mother stop him?” I whispered, sinking into a chair. “She was supposed to protect us.”

Mara sat beside me, gently taking my hand in hers. “Diane didn't just allow it, Ethan. She encouraged it. She wanted the social status, the galas, and the luxury life at any cost. Grant was her favorite because he was willing to break the rules to give her what she wanted.”

Suddenly, the archive room door creaked open.

I snapped my head around. Standing in the doorway was Vanessa Price, the former CFO. She had posted bail earlier that morning and looked disheveled, her eyes wild with panic.

In her right hand, she held a small black revolver pointed directly at Mara’s chest.

“Give me the drives, Mara,” Vanessa demanded, her voice shaking violently. “Give me the hard drives, or I swear to God I’ll end this right now.”
