Chapter 6 - The ConfessionSix weeks after the seizure of the estate, Grant Hawthorne sat inside a windowless interrogation room at the Essex County Holding Facility.

Stripped of his family’s wealth, his high-priced corporate defense lawyers, and his mother’s influence, his arrogant persona had completely disintegrated.

Sitting across from him was Marcus Vance and ADA Sarah Jenkins, a thick stack of plea agreement documents resting between them on the metal table.

“He won't make it to trial, Marcus,” Sarah whispered, reviewing the evidence summaries. “The state grand jury returned a twenty-four-count indictment yesterday. If he goes before a jury, he’s facing a mandatory minimum of thirty-five years.”

Inside the interrogation room, Grant sat with his head in his hands, weeping silently, his orange jumpsuit rumpled and stained.

The door opened, and I walked into the room.

Grant looked up, his bloodshot eyes widening in sudden, pathetic desperation. He slid out of his chair and dropped to his knees on the cold concrete floor, reaching his trembling hands out toward me across the table.

“Arthur... Arthur, please!” Grant sobbed, his voice cracking violently. “Please talk to the prosecutors! Tell them to drop the federal charges! I made a terrible mistake! I was under so much financial pressure!”

I stood three feet away from him, looking down at his pathetic, begging posture with an expression of pure, unshakeable detachment.

“You didn't make a mistake when you swung that baseball bat, Grant,” I said softly. “You didn't make a mistake when you hit my daughter and locked her in a room while she bled.”

“I love her! I still love her!” Grant whimpered, burying his face in his hands.

“Men who love women don't discipline them with baseball bats, Grant,” I replied, every word landing like a iron strike. “You loved her money. You loved control. And now you’re going to spend the next two decades learning what it feels like to have none.”

Grant collapsed forward onto the floor, weeping uncontrollably as the corrections officers stepped inside to drag him back to his cell.

He signed the full, unreserved guilty plea forty-five minutes later—surrendering all claims to the marital assets, confessing to every count of domestic assault, grand larceny, and corporate wire fraud, and accepting a mandatory twenty-two-year sentence in a state maximum-security penitentiary.
