Chapter 4 - The Secret Sanctuary

Safe within the walls of Mrs. Walsh’s home, I spent the next several hours processing the betrayal while securing our digital ammunition. Mrs. Walsh, a retired high school literature teacher with a sharp mind and zero tolerance for bullies, treated me like her own daughter. She helped me clean up, provided a fresh change of clothes, and carefully packaged the flash drive containing the doorbell camera footage.
"Ethan is a good man, Olivia," Mrs. Walsh said gently as she handed me another cup of tea. "Blind, perhaps, because he grew up under the thumb of that tyrant, but he loves you. When he sees this video, his mother's empire of lies is going to crumble."
"I hope so," I replied, staring at my reflection in the kitchen window. The jagged, uneven chop job Victoria had inflicted on my hair glared back at me—a permanent physical reminder of the abuse I had endured while trying to keep the peace. "For months, I thought patience and compliance would earn her respect. I was a fool. You can't appease someone whose sole objective is your destruction."

"Patience is a virtue, my dear, but self-preservation is a survival law," Mrs. Walsh noted firmly, placing her hand over mine. "Now, what is your next move?"
"Ethan's flight lands at JFK at six o'clock tomorrow morning," I said, a firm resolve hardening my tone. "He's supposed to come straight back to our apartment in the city. I won't let Victoria twist the narrative. I'll be waiting for him with the truth."
