Chapter 1 - The Locked Door

The air inside the grand guest bedroom of the Caldwell estate was heavy with the scent of beeswax and old money, contrasting sharply with the cold panic tearing through my chest. I stood backed against the antique mahogany dresser, my hands trembling as Victoria Caldwell loomed over me like a shadow from a nightmare. Her blonde hair was styled with immaculate precision, and her silk blouse seemed almost mocking under the dim light of the crystal wall sconces.

Minutes earlier, a simple household accident involving an imported bottle of truffle oil had shattered on the pristine marble hallway floor. Before I could even bend down to clean up the mess, Victoria had appeared, her face twisting into a mask of pure condescension. When I told her I would replace it with my own money, she scoffed, reminding me of my humble origins in rural Ohio. Then, her grip had closed viciously around my arm, dragging me down the corridor despite my protests, before slamming the heavy wooden door shut.

The metallic click of the lock turning from the outside sent a shiver straight down my spine.

"Open the door, Victoria," I had demanded, my voice shaking.

Instead of answering, she crossed the room, pulled open the top drawer of the dresser, and withdrew a long pair of heavy metal scissors. The steel blades glinted coldly under the light.

I backed away until my lower back hit the edge of the furniture. "What are you doing?"

Her eyes locked onto my hair—specifically onto the long braid that rested over my shoulder. My mother had started braiding my hair when I was six years old. Even after I grew up, earned my graduate degrees on scholarships, and married her son Ethan, I kept it long. It was my final anchor to home, to a family that loved me for who I was, not for what pedigree I carried.

Victoria knew that history intimately. It was precisely why she wanted to destroy it.

"You walked into this family looking like some storybook farm girl and thought Ethan would protect you forever," Victoria sneered, taking another deliberate step forward.

"Put the scissors down," I whispered, my throat tightening.

Before I could reach for the doorknob, she lunged forward and seized my braid in a tight, merciless fist, yanking my head back so hard that a sharp snap of pain flared across my scalp.

"Victoria!" I cried out, clawing at her fingers.

"You don’t deserve to look like a bride," she hissed.

The blades of the scissors closed. The sickening, thick crunch of my hair being sheared off right beside my ear echoed in the silent room. My childhood braid fell against my shoulder for a split second before sliding down to land on the pale carpet.

For one horrifying second, neither of us moved. Then, she cut again. I screamed, trying desperately to wrench free, but she held my hair close to the scalp and hacked at it in jagged, brutal sections until heavy strands of brown hair littered the floor. When she finally stepped back, I caught a glimpse of my reflection in the mirror: one side barely touched my shoulder, while the other had been cropped mercilessly near my jaw.
