Chapter 6 - Reclaiming EmmaBy Monday afternoon, the Mercer family's prestigious reputation was completely gone, replaced by a viral storm of public outrage. The local news stations had run the footage of the courthouse arrests on a loop, exposing the corrupt connection between Caleb, Diane, and the Sheriff.

I stood in the doorway of Emma's hospital room, watching her slowly sit up in bed. The color had finally returned to her cheeks, and her eyes, though still tired, held a spark of the fierce, independent girl she had been before she met Caleb.
"Dad," she whispered, her voice trembling as she looked at me. "Is it really over? Are they really gone?"
"They are never coming back to this valley, Emma," I said, walking over to sit beside her. I reached out, my fingers gently brushing a loose strand of hair from her face. "Caleb is being transferred to a high-security detention facility in Seattle this afternoon. His cousin has been suspended from the police force, and Diane’s lease on the farmhouse has been legally terminated."
"I was so afraid, Dad," Emma sobbed, burying her face in my shoulder. "Every time I tried to call you, Caleb would take the phone. He told me that if I left, his mother would have me committed to a private asylum. They made me feel like I was completely crazy."
"That's what bullies do, sweetheart," I said, holding her tightly. "They isolate you so you forget how strong you are. But you aren't alone anymore. The land beneath their feet belonged to us the whole time. You are a Vance, Emma. And our family doesn't break."

"What about the farmhouse?" she asked, looking out the window at the sunny afternoon.
"We are going to tear it down," I said. "We're going to demolish every single stone of the place where they tried to break you, and we're going to build a beautiful, open-space park for the children of this valley. I don't want a single memory of their poison left on our land."
