The Screaming Silence / Chapter 5 / 10

Chapter 5 - The Sheriff's ChoiceAt 9:00 AM, the rain had stopped, leaving the courthouse steps damp and gray under the autumn sky. Diane Mercer stood before a small crowd of local reporters, a delicate handkerchief pressed to her eyes as she wept for the cameras.

"My son is an honorable, hardworking man," Diane cried into the microphones. "He was brutally attacked in his own home by Frank Mercer, a wealthy real estate tycoon who thinks his money makes him king of this valley. Frank broke into our private property, assaulted my son, and took my daughter-in-law by force. We are demanding justice!"

Sheriff Mercer stood behind her, his uniform pressed, nodding in solemn agreement.

"The Millbrook Sheriff's Office is conducting a full investigation into Frank's illegal entry," the Sheriff announced to the reporters. "We do not tolerate landlord intimidation in this county."

I watched the live broadcast from my car parked across the street. Beside me sat Detective Ramirez.

"They are digging their own graves, Frank," Ramirez said, holding a secure federal arrest warrant in his hand. "The Sheriff doesn't know that we’ve already bypassed his office. The State Attorney General’s Special Crimes Unit has taken over the case."

"It's time to turn the lights on, Ramirez," I said, opening the car door.

I walked across the street, my steps slow and deliberate as I climbed the stone steps of the courthouse. The reporters, recognizing me instantly, turned their cameras toward me, a wave of excited whispers sweeping through the crowd.

Diane froze, her face turning an ugly, distorted shade of purple as I stepped onto the plaza, completely unfazed by her glares.

"My name is Frank Vance," I said, my voice carrying easily over the wind without a microphone. "And since Mrs. Mercer has decided to discuss property rights, I think it’s only fair we show the audience who actually owns the land."

I turned to Ramirez, who stepped forward with three state troopers, their dark uniforms contrasting sharply with the local sheriff's deputies.

"Sheriff Mercer," Ramirez announced, displaying the federal warrant. "Under federal authority, you are hereby ordered to step down. Your office is being audited for obstruction of justice and civil rights violations linked to the cover-up of the Mercer family crimes."

The Sheriff's jaw dropped, his face turning pale as the state troopers immediately stepped between him and the cameras. The crowd of reporters erupted into absolute chaos, their microphones thrust toward Diane, who was now trembling violently beside her son's defense attorney.
