Chapter 3 - The Forensic AnalysisWithin an hour, Detective Ruiz ordered an emergency forensic swab of the adhesive residue on Lily’s neck and requested the laboratory run an immediate panel for transdermal sedatives.

While we waited in the high-security pediatric ward, Mark frantically texted on his phone, his posture stiffening every time a nurse walked past the window.

“I’m taking my daughter home,” Mark suddenly announced, reaching for Lily’s arm. “This is a circus.”

“Mr. Vance, if you touch that child before the lab results return, you will be detained for obstruction of justice,” Detective Ruiz stated firmly, two armed hospital marshals stepping into the doorway.

At 3:15 a.m., the head lab technician entered, holding an encrypted digital chart.

“The swabs confirmed high concentrations of Clonidine and Fentanyl adhesive residue,” the technician reported, his face grim. “It's a heavy clinical sedative combination. It explains the dizziness and confusion. Over time, it could have caused respiratory failure.”

“And the DNA profile from the skin swab?” I asked, my voice trembling with fear and fury.

The technician looked at Detective Ruiz. “The epithelial cells recovered from the adhesive backing do not match the mother, Claire Vance. The DNA profile belongs to a female relation matching Vanessa Cole.”
