Chapter 2 - The Perfume TrapâMom wore her long white coat,â Lily whispered, her small voice shaking as she clutched the hospital blanket. âShe smelled like jasmine. Just like you do when you hug me goodbye.â

Detective Ruiz looked up at me, her eyes narrowing as two police officers moved closer to the hospital door, blocking my exit.
âDetective, I haven't been to Markâs house since the divorce was finalized fourteen months ago,â I pleaded, my heart hammering against my ribs. âI don't own a long white coat. And my jasmine perfume... it went missing from my vanity bag six months ago during the custody drop-off.â
Mark let out a loud, mocking scoff from the corner of the room. âOh, brilliant, Claire. Lose your perfume and blame it on a ghost. The child just named you. She said you drugged her!â
âMr. Vance,â Detective Ruiz interrupted, her voice dropping into an icy, unyielding register as she looked at Mark. âWhy would your ex-wife need to dress up in a disguise to visit her own daughter at your residence?â
âBecause sheâs unstable!â Mark shouted, stepping forward with practiced anger. âShe wants full custody, and sheâs trying to manipulate the system!â
I knelt back down beside the gurney, ignoring Mark entirely. âLily, sweetheart, look at my hands. Did 'Mom' have a ring on her finger?â

Lily looked at my bare hands, then her eyes went wide. âShe... she had a big red ring. A ruby.â
My breath caught. I didn't own a ruby ring. But Markâs new live-in girlfriend, Vanessa Cole, wore a massive ruby heirloom on her left hand every single day.
