Chapter 4 - The Titled MansionThree days after giving birth, I sat up in my hospital bed, holding tiny Maya against my chest. She was hooked up to monitors in the NICU, but she was gaining weight steadily and breathing on her own.

The heavy door to my room opened, and Mara walked in, carrying a large leather briefcase and a bottle of fresh green juice.
“How’s my favorite niece?” Mara smiled, leaning over to gently touch Maya’s tiny cheek.
“She’s a fighter,” I said softly, looking up at my sister. “What happened in court today?”
Mara sat down in the armchair beside my bed, opening her briefcase with a crisp, satisfying snap.
“Well,” Mara began, pulling out a thick stack of court orders. “Adrian’s high-priced attorney tried to request a temporary restraining order against Marcus and me, claiming we illegally entered your home.”
“And?”
“I presented the judge with the video files you saved on the cloud server,” Mara said, her eyes flashing with cold delight. “The footage of Adrian dragging you down the stairs, Lenora laughing, and Arthur egging him on. The judge almost broke his gavel slamming it down.”
She handed me the top document.
“As of two hours ago,” Mara explained, “the court has issued a permanent, non-expiring order of protection. Adrian, Lenora, and Arthur are barred from approaching within one thousand feet of you or Maya for the rest of their natural lives. Parental rights for Adrian have been formally terminated based on severe physical cruelty and child endangerment.”
I took a deep, clean breath, feeling a weight lift from my lungs that had been crushing me for two years. “What about the house?”
“The house on Maple Street was bought using money Adrian embezzled from your joint account,” Mara revealed, handing me a secondary legal deed. “The judge executed an emergency asset freeze and transferred total ownership of the estate to you as partial restitution for medical damages.”
I looked at the document in my hands. The house where I had been beaten, starved, and humiliated was now legally mine.
“They’re homeless, Chloe,” Mara added smoothly. “When the federal marshals executed the corporate tax warrant on Vance International yesterday afternoon, they seized the Chicago mansion, their corporate accounts, and their private vehicles. Lenora and Arthur are currently staying in a budget motel near the interstate, waiting for their arraignment.”
I looked down at my sleeping baby girl. Her tiny fingers curled around my pinky finger.
“They thought I was a helpless victim,” I murmured.
“They mistook your patience for weakness,” Mara said gently, taking my hand. “They forgot who raised you.”

Suddenly, a quiet knock sounded at the hospital door.
Marcus stepped inside, looking grave. “Chloe, Mara... you might want to turn on the news.”
