Chapter 2 - The Vanguard ArrivesFor twenty minutes, Adrian and his parents ignored me as I lay on the cold kitchen floor, surrounded by spilled flour and my own fluids.

Lenora sat at the dining table, complaining about the draft from the window, while Adrian calmly ate a bowl of cereal. They believed I was trapped, helpless, and completely cut off from the outside world.
They had no idea what the word RED meant to my family.
My sister Mara was not just an attorney. Her husband, Marcus Vance—no relation to Adrian’s pathetic family—was a former Commander in the United States Marine Corps who currently ran the largest private security firm on the East Coast. When my text hit Mara’s phone, it didn't just pop up as a message; it triggered an automated GPS locator feed, overridden silent modes, and dispatched an armored security unit straight to my location.
At 5:32 a.m., the front gates of our private suburban cul-de-sac were violently torn off their hinges.
The deafening crash echoed through the quiet house. Adrian jumped up from his chair, dropping his spoon onto the floor. “What the hell was that?!”
Arthur stood up, his face pale. “Is it the police?”
Before Adrian could reach the front window, two heavy black SUVs slammed into the driveway, their headlights blinding the entire front facade of the house. Four men in tactical gear stepped out, accompanied by Marcus Vance and my sister Mara.
Mara didn't knock on the front door. Marcus kicked the double oak doors off their frame with a single, devastating blow that shattered the lock into a dozen pieces.
Adrian retreated into the kitchen, grabbing a heavy wooden rolling pin from the counter, his face contorted in a mixture of rage and terror. “Who the hell are you?! Get out of my house or I’m calling the cops!”
Mara walked into the kitchen wearing a dark coat, her eyes cold, sharp, and terrifyingly calm. Behind her stood Marcus—six-foot-four, built like a mountain, his tactical radio buzzing quietly against his vest.
When Mara’s eyes landed on me lying helpless on the wet tile floor, blood soaking my nightgown, her breath hitched.
“Chloe...” Mara gasped, dropping to her knees beside me, gently lifting my head into her lap. “Oh God, Chloe... hold on. Paramedics are two minutes behind us.”
“Mara...” I sobbed, my hands clutching her coat. “The baby... she’s coming...”
Marcus took one step toward Adrian. The air in the kitchen instantly turned freezing cold.
Adrian raised the rolling pin, trying to project fake courage. “Stay back! She’s my wife! This is a domestic matter! She fell down the stairs!”
Marcus didn't utter a word. He stepped into Adrian’s space, caught the rolling pin mid-air, twisted it out of Adrian’s grip like a child’s toy, and delivered a swift, brutal knee to Adrian’s stomach.
Adrian hit the floor with a strangled gasp, rolling onto his side, clutching his ribs in agony.
Lenora screamed, backing up against the refrigerator. “You can’t do this! We have rights! We’ll sue you!”
Mara stood up slowly from my side, turning to face Lenora and Arthur. Her voice was ice.

“My name is Mara Sterling,” she said, her voice echoing through the ruined kitchen like a death sentence. “And by the time I am finished with your family, you won't even have enough money left to buy a newspaper to read about your son’s life sentence.”
Outside, the wail of advanced life-support ambulances echoed down the street.
