Chapter 4 - THE SECRET THE FAMILY KEPT
My sister went on to reveal what happened after we left the barbecue. Her own six-year-old son had asked why Grandma could decide which children were real, and when she tried to brush it off, he asked if Grandma could stop loving him too if he did something wrong. Terrified by her child’s anxiety, my sister picked up her keys and walked out. She told me that Mom kept calling me because she wanted me to take the blame so the rest of the family could return to comfortable ignorance. When I asked if Mom's comment had been spontaneous, my sister dropped a bombshell: before I even arrived, Mom had instructed everyone not to interfere if she "corrected" him, proving this was a premeditated act of humiliation.
