Chapter 9 - Standing Ground TogetherOn Friday morning—the final day of the deadline—Richard Sterling arrived at Mercer’s Bakery expecting us to sign the surrender papers. Dr. Julian Vance had also driven down from Columbus, believing Harper would accept his foundation offer.

They stepped into the bakery together, confident and smug.
Harper and I were waiting for them behind the front counter, flanked by Mayor Henderson and our attorney, Arthur Hayes.
“Miss Dawson, Mr. Mercer,” Sterling said smoothly, laying the contracts on the glass case. “I trust you’re ready to finalize the agreements?”
Arthur Hayes stepped forward, placing a thick stack of legal injunctions on top of Sterling’s papers.
“Not quite, Mr. Sterling,” Arthur said with a satisfied grin. “This is a formal cease-and-desist order issued by the State District Court. We have filed criminal fraud charges against Apex Healthcare for illegal debt manipulation and corporate extortion.”
Sterling’s smug expression crumbled. “This is absurd—”
“We’ve also reported your fraudulent inspector to the State Licensing Board,” Mayor Henderson added sternly. “And as of eight o'clock this morning, the town of Willow Creek has fully cleared Mr. Dawson’s legitimate medical balance through our local community fund.”
Julian Vance looked at Harper in disbelief. “Harper... you turned down my foundation offer for this?”
Harper stepped forward, looking Julian directly in the eye with absolute confidence and pride.
“Your foundation was an attempt to buy my life, Julian,” she said clearly. “Willow Creek didn't try to buy me. They stood by me. And I’m staying right here, where I belong.”
Sterling slammed his briefcase shut, his face red with embarrassment and defeat. “You people are making a massive mistake!”

“The exit is right behind you, gentlemen,” I said calmly, opening the front door and letting the cool morning breeze fill the bakery. “And don't bother coming back to Willow Creek.”
Julian and Sterling walked out in bitter defeat, while the townspeople waiting outside cheered as they drove away.
