Chapter 4 - Shadows over Willow CreekWhile our feelings were growing, trouble was brewing on the horizon.

Willow Creek was small, but it wasn't immune to greed. A large regional medical development corporation, Apex Healthcare, had been quietly buying up property along Main Street and near the county hospital. Their goal was to build a private, high-cost eldercare facility and luxury medical plaza.
One afternoon, a sharp-dressed man in a tailored grey suit entered Mercer’s Bakery. He introduced himself as Richard Sterling, a representative for Apex.
“Mr. Mercer,” Sterling said with a polite, artificial smile, placing a thick envelope on the counter. “We are acquiring the commercial properties on this block. We’re offering you twenty percent above market value for Mercer’s Bakery.”
I looked at the envelope without touching it. “This bakery isn't for sale.”
Sterling’s smile turned thin and cold. “Every small business has a price, Mr. Mercer. Independent bakeries don't survive when large corporate developments move in. If you don't take this buyout, your property tax will skyrocket, and your lease renewal will become... complicated.”
“I own the building,” I said firmly. “And I’m not selling.”
Sterling nodded slowly, gathering his papers. “A stubborn romantic. How noble. But business isn't romantic, Mr. Mercer. You might want to ask your neighbor, Miss Dawson, about how relentless medical debt can be.”
My stomach tightened. “What does Harper have to do with this?”
“Her father’s care facility bills are stacking up,” Sterling revealed casually, stepping toward the exit. “Apex owns the debt holding firm that handles Willow Creek County Hospital’s long-term arrears. If she can't pay, her father loses his bed next month. Unless, of course, she agrees to sell her family home to us.”

The bell above the door chimed as Sterling walked out into the afternoon light.
I stood behind the counter with my fists clenched, anger rising like a flood. They weren't just targeting my bakery—they were trying to corner Harper when she was at her most vulnerable.
