Chapter 4 - The Hospital Room ReunionAt St. Judeâs Childrenâs Hospital, seven-year-old Ashley sat in a quiet pediatric bed, eating a bowl of warm chicken soup, holding Buddy tightly under her arm.
The door to her room opened slowly.
Officer Natalie Perez pushed a wheelchair into the room. Sitting in the chair, wrapped in warm blankets, with his leg in a heavy cast and IV lines attached to his arm, was Andrew Mercer.
Ashley froze. Her spoon dropped onto the tray.
âDaddy...?â she whispered, her eyes widening in pure, disbelieving wonder.
âIâm sorry I was late, baby,â Andrew choked out, his voice breaking into deep, overwhelming sobs as he reached his arms out. âDaddy got stuck in the rain... but I brought your medicine.â
Ashley scrambled out of the hospital bed, throwing her small arms around her fatherâs neck, burying her face in his shoulder.

âI waited for you!â Ashley wept softly. âI left the porch light on every night!â
âI saw it, sweetheart,â Andrew cried, holding his daughter as if he would never let her go again. âI saw the light.â
