Chapter 1 - The Call from the HallwayBy the fourth day, seven-year-old Ashley Mercer had stopped asking herself when her father would come home. Instead, she kept staring at the driveway. Waiting. Listening. Believing. Because her daddy had made her a promise. And in all seven years of her life, Andrew Mercer had never broken one.

“My dad promised he’d be back in thirty minutes.”

The words were so quiet that emergency dispatcher Eric Lawson almost thought he had misheard them. He leaned closer to his headset. Outside the Bellwood County dispatch center, rain hammered the windows with relentless force. Severe storms had battered the region for nearly a week. Creeks had swollen into violent rivers. Roads had vanished beneath brown floodwater. Rural communities had been cut off completely.

But none of that prepared Eric for the tiny voice on the other end of the line.

“Sweetheart,” he said carefully, “what’s your name?”

“Ashley.”

“And how old are you, Ashley?”

“Seven.”

Eric glanced at the call timer. Something about the child’s voice unsettled him. He had handled emergency calls involving frightened children before. Usually, they cried. They screamed. They talked so quickly he could barely understand them. Ashley wasn’t doing any of those things. She sounded exhausted. Not sleepy. Not simply scared. Exhausted in a way no seven-year-old should ever sound.

“Are you alone in the house?”

“Yes.”

“How long has your daddy been gone?”

Silence. Then came the answer that made his entire body go cold.

“He said thirty minutes. But now it’s been four whole days.”

Within minutes, Officer Natalie Perez arrived at the Mercer home. Ashley stood barefoot in the hallway, wearing her father's oversized plaid shirt, clutching her stuffed dog, Buddy. While online rumors quickly condemned Andrew Mercer as a deadbeat father who had abandoned his sick child, Natalie found a clean home, a grocery list, and a pharmacy receipt proving Andrew had bought Ashley’s medicine less than an hour after leaving.

He hadn't abandoned her. Something terrible had happened on the road.

And downstream from the washed-out county bridge, search crews found Andrew’s old pickup truck submerged in the raging floodwaters—with a grocery bag bearing Ashley’s prescription sitting half-buried in the mud nearby.
