THE PRICE OF GOLDEN SILENCE / Chapter 8 / 10

Chapter 8 - The Hammer of Justice FallsThe jury deliberated for less than thirty minutes—one of the fastest verdicts in Maricopa County legal history.

When the court reassembled for the reading of the verdict, the atmospheric tension in the chamber was electric.

Judge Marcus Thomas stood at the bench, holding the official verdict sheets.

“On count one, Aggravated Domestic Assault and Felony Elder/Vulnerable Adult Abuse,” Judge Thomas read aloud, his voice thunderous. “We find the defendant, Lorraine Vance, GUILTY.”

A wave of emotional murmurs swept through the gallery.

“On count two, Felony Medical Endangerment and Grand Larceny, we find the defendant, Lorraine Vance, GUILTY.”

Lorraine slumped forward onto the defense table, covering her face with her hands, sobbing hysterically as eight consecutive guilty verdicts were read against her.

“On count one, Conspiracy to Commit Vulnerable Adult Abuse and Grand Theft,” Judge Thomas continued, looking down at Brooke. “We find the defendant, Brooke Vance, GUILTY.”

Brooke let out a sharp, choked shriek, slumping sideways into her attorney’s arms.

Two weeks later, during the formal sentencing hearing, Judge Thomas delivered his final judgment with zero mercy.

“Lorraine Vance,” Judge Thomas declared, slamming his gavel down with thunderous force. “Your actions represent an extraordinary depth of human cruelty, greed, and moral bankruptcy. You starved a dying woman and stole her medical care for luxury items. I sentence you to fifteen years in state prison without the possibility of early parole.”

“Brooke Vance, for your active participation in this cruel conspiracy, you are sentenced to seven years in state prison.”

As court officers chained Lorraine and Brooke to lead them away to the transport van, Lorraine turned toward the gallery one last time, tears streaming down her wrinkled face, mouthing: “Ethan... please... I’m your mother...”

I stood beside Natalie, holding her hand tightly, staring straight past Lorraine as if she were nothing more than a ghost.

The monsters were locked away forever.
