Chapter 12 - Blackwood No Longer Needed My Name

As the fellowship grew, Blackwood’s trust structure became restrictive.

I was sole lifetime beneficiary.

After me, complicated family provisions.

I had no biological children.

Nate had a son from his first marriage, Peter, who liked me but had his own life.

I did not want Blackwood becoming another inheritance battlefield.

So I proposed transferring the house into a permanent nonprofit trust.

Nate supported it.

Grayson surprisingly objected.

“That house is your family.”

“No. It housed my family.”

“Different?”

“Yes.”

Evelyn supported me.

Celeste supported.

Nora cried.

“You’re giving it away?”

“I’m giving it purpose.”

The trust allowed Nate and me lifetime residence in part of the house.

The rest became music, arts, and historical education space.

No Caldwell ownership.

No Vail ownership.

No Monroe ownership.

Shared mission.

At signing, David asked, “Voluntary?”

I smiled.

“Yes.”

“Under no undue influence?”

“Only Nora.”

She cried harder.

I signed.

The house became Blackwood Center for Music and Memory.

My mother would have complained about the sentimental name.

Then secretly loved it.
