Chapter 11 - Celeste Played the Piano Again

The fifth fellowship anniversary became a large event.
Two hundred guests.
Music.
Dinner.
No champagne near the Steinway.
Nora enforced rules with terrifying efficiency.
Celeste had funded a new composition award in Daniel Monroe’s name.
She was asked to present it.
Before the ceremony, she approached me.
“I want to ask something.”
“What?”
“Could I play one piece?”
I stared.
The first night returned.
Ivory dress.
Wrong notes.
Smile.
Humiliation.
Celeste saw my hesitation.
“It’s okay. Forget it.”
“No.”
She looked up.
“What piece?”
“My mother taught me Clair de Lune.”
I had not known.
“Are you good?”
“Better than before.”
I laughed.
“Please be.”
She played.
Beautifully.
Not perfect.
Gentle.
When she finished, I cried.
So did she.
The audience applauded.
No scandal.
No territory.
Afterward, Celeste whispered, “Thank you.”
“That piano survived us.”
“Barely.”
We laughed.
That moment mattered more than apology.
The object she once used to wound me became shared music.

Not erased.
Transformed.
