Chapter 11 - The Night Everything Happened Too Soon

At thirty-one weeks, my water broke.
All three babies were coming early.
Raymond was in Boston.
Augustus drove behind ambulance like a seventy-six-year-old outlaw.
Dr. Patel assembled a neonatal team.
I was terrified.
Raymond arrived forty minutes before surgery, still wearing airport clothes.
“Can I stay?”
Only one support person allowed.
I chose Augustus.
Raymond accepted it.
That mattered.
The babies arrived by C-section.
First: Eleanor Daniel Harrington Whitmore, three pounds eight ounces.
Second: James Augustus Harrington Whitmore, three pounds eleven.
Third: Rose Clara Harrington Whitmore, three pounds four.
Three cries.
Three tiny lives.
Raymond saw them through NICU glass.
He put one hand against the window and cried openly.
I watched from wheelchair.

No bitterness.
Just history.
