Chapter 1 - THE RING HE REMOVED|

The night my husband’s first love returned to Chicago, I watched him remove the wedding ring he had worn for five years. He thought I would quietly accept being hidden again, the way I always had. Instead, I threw my own ring into the trash in front of everyone—and six months later, he saw the secret I had taken with me.
My name is Claire Bennett, and for five years, I was secretly married to Alexander Moretti.
Alexander was one of Chicago’s most powerful Mafia bosses. He was wealthy, feared, and used to controlling everything around him, including the way our marriage existed.
We wore matching silver bands engraved with each other’s initials, but no one was allowed to know we were husband and wife.
I accepted that for years.
Then Sophia Reynolds came home.
She was Alexander’s first love, the woman he had waited for before marrying me. She had been gone for three years, and the night she returned happened to be Alexander’s grandfather’s seventieth birthday celebration.
Half an hour before the banquet, Alexander texted me saying his stomach hurt and asked me to bring medicine.
I dissolved it in warm water and hurried toward the private lounge.
The door was slightly open.
That was when I saw him standing in front of a mirror, twisting his wedding ring off his finger.
It was so tight he had to pull twice.
His friend Nathan stared at him. “Why are you taking that off? You never remove it.”
Alexander slipped the ring into his jacket.
“Sophia’s back. I don’t want her seeing it.”
My entire body went cold.
Nathan frowned. “What about Claire?”
Alexander adjusted his cuff like none of it mattered.
“Claire won’t make a big deal out of something so small.”
Then someone shouted from the banquet hall, “Sophia’s here!”
Alexander immediately headed for the door.
It struck the glass in my hand, spilling warm medicine over my fingers.
“Claire?” he said, startled.
I looked at him. “The medicine is already dissolved.”
He glanced at my wedding ring.
“I’ll explain later.”
Then he walked past me without another word.
He didn’t take the medicine.
He didn’t ask if I was hurt.
He went straight to Sophia.
Inside the banquet hall, I watched her open her arms.
“Aren’t you going to hug me?”
Alexander smiled in a way I hadn’t seen in years and embraced her in front of everyone.
People laughed and applauded.
For five years, he had never held my hand publicly.
Never hugged me at family gatherings.
I had convinced myself he simply hated public affection.
That night, I finally understood.
He didn’t hate showing affection.
He just didn’t want to show it to me.
Then Sophia noticed my ring.
“That’s beautiful. Is that a wedding ring?”
Someone nearby laughed. “Claire, don’t tell us you secretly got married!”
Alexander’s face tightened.
Everyone turned toward me.
I looked down at the silver band I had worn faithfully for five years.
“Yes,” I said. “I’ve been married for five years.”
The room went silent.
Then I added, “But we’re getting divorced.”
I pulled the ring off, walked to the nearest trash can, and dropped it inside.
The metallic sound was tiny.
But Alexander looked like I had fired a gun.
Later that night, he confronted me.
“Do you understand what you did?”
I stared at him. “You removed your ring because you didn’t want Sophia knowing you were married. I made things easier for you.”
His expression hardened.
“Once you ask for a divorce, don’t come back regretting it.”
“I won’t.”
And I didn’t.
Six months later, I had moved to a quiet suburb outside Chicago.
I had also hidden something from him.
I was pregnant.
I chose a small hospital for my appointments because I wanted nothing connecting me to Alexander’s world.
Then one morning, outside an examination room, I heard a familiar voice.
“Claire?”
I froze.
Sophia stood there.
So did Alexander.
His eyes moved from my face to my stomach.
And stopped.
Sophia stared too. “Claire… are you pregnant?”
I swallowed.
“Whose baby is it?”
For six months, I had protected this secret.
Now Alexander was standing directly in front of me.
I looked straight at him.
“This baby is mine and my ex-husband’s.”
May you like
Alexander went completely still.
And for the first time since I had known him, the man who always had control of everything had absolutely nothing to say.
