Chapter 8 - Dismissing the Interloper

The sun climbed higher into the Texas sky, casting bright shafts of golden light through the soaring arched windows of the Whitaker mansion, illuminating an atmosphere that felt lighter, cleaner, and infinitely more honest than it had in years. Down in the service quarters, the estate manager—a rigid, old-school veteran named Mrs. Gable who had silently aided Patricia’s passive-aggressive campaign against Clara—was quietly summoned to Ethan’s private study. Mrs. Gable entered the room with her posture stiff, expecting to discuss upcoming gala preparations. Instead, she found Ethan sitting behind his massive desk with a termination letter already printed and signed. "Mrs. Gable," Ethan began without looking up, his tone flat and icy. "Effective immediately, your employment with the Whitaker household is terminated." Mrs. Gable gasped, stepping forward in outrage. "Mr. Whitaker! You can't be serious! I have managed this estate for fifteen years with absolute perfection! On what grounds—?" "On the grounds of gross disloyalty, petty harassment, and deliberate conspiracy against members of my domestic staff," Ethan interrupted, looking up with a gaze so piercing it made her step back. "I am well aware of how you and Ms. Hale systematically undermined Clara Bennett, treating her as an outsider in her own workplace while she carried the entire emotional weight of raising my children. Do not test me further. Collect your severance package from HR by five o'clock, or I will have security escort you off the premises with your reputation permanently in ruins." Faced with the absolute, terrifying finality of a man who had finally opened his eyes, Mrs. Gable pressed her lips into a thin, white line, turned on her heel, and walked out of the study without uttering another word. Upstairs, unaware of the administrative earthquake shaking the mansion's hierarchy, Clara was kneeling beside Avery and Sophie in the playroom, helping them complete a watercolor painting of the backyard rose garden. A soft knock sounded at the open playroom door, and Ethan appeared. He had removed his suit jacket and tie, rolling up his white dress shirt sleeves to reveal forearms dusted with paint from sitting on the floor with his daughters earlier that morning. "Clara," Ethan said gently, catching her eye. "When you have a quick moment... could you step down to my study? We need to talk about your contract." Clara’s heart skipped a beat. For a terrifying second, she thought the sudden departure of Patricia and Mrs. Gable meant the household was dissolving and she was about to be let go as collateral damage. Wiping her hands on a damp towel, she stood up smoothly. "Of course, Mr. Whitaker. I'll be right down."
