Chapter 7 - The Confrontation in the Foyer

Patricia stood frozen against the marble column, her mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water as the full weight of her catastrophic miscalculation crashed down upon her. The untouchable, wealthy CEO she had manipulated like a chess piece had suddenly transformed into an apex predator protecting his cubs. All her carefully cultivated charm, her high-society connections, and her subtle psychological warfare had evaporated into thin air against the raw, protective fury of a awakened father. "You're making a colossal mistake, Ethan Whitaker!" Patricia hissed, her voice losing its cultured cadence, revealing the bitter, entitled narcissist underneath. "You're throwing away a woman of your own class for a domestic servant who cleans toilets! You'll regret this when the whole city is laughing at you!" "The only person I regret is myself, for listening to a cold, parasitic fraud like you," Ethan bit back, pointing a steady, unyielding finger toward the heavy front doors. "Get out. Now." Realizing that the game was utterly lost and that staying another second risked exposing her to further public humiliation and professional ruin, Patricia snatched her designer handbag off the bench, threw her car keys down onto the marble floor with a sharp clatter, and stormed out through the doors, slamming them so hard the crystal chandelier overhead trembled. As the heavy oak panels locked shut behind her, Ethan stood alone in the grand foyer, chest heaving, the adrenaline slowly giving way to a profound, sickening wave of emotional exhaustion. He turned around slowly, looking up the majestic curved staircase. Peering timidly over the wrought-iron banister on the second landing were Avery and Sophie, their wide, solemn eyes staring down at him in apprehension. Behind them, standing quietly in the doorway of the linen closet with a damp cleaning cloth in her hand, was Clara. She wasn't smiling, nor did she look vindicated; her calm blue eyes simply held his, waiting to see what storm the master of the house was going to unleash next. Ethan’s legs felt heavy as lead. He walked toward the stairs, each step carrying the crushing weight of a man attempting to climb out of a deep, self-made grave. He stopped three steps up, looking directly up at Clara and his daughters. "Girls," Ethan said, his voice cracking with raw, unmasked vulnerability. "Can Daddy... can Daddy come up and sit with you for a while?"
