Chapter 1 - The Tablecloth DemandThe moment Grant Mercer twisted his fist into my daughter’s hair, the entire restaurant went silent.

He forced Charlotte’s face toward the white tablecloth and said, “Bow when my mother speaks to you.”

Charlotte was thirty-two, a pediatric nurse, and the gentlest person I had ever known. She had spent twelve-hour shifts calming terrified children, yet now she sat frozen beside her husband while his mother, Diane, lifted her wineglass and smiled.

“That is how you correct a disrespectful wife,” Diane said, taking a slow, poised sip.

I shoved back my chair, my hands shaking with absolute fury. “Take your hand off my daughter.”

Grant looked at me as if I were the one causing an unprovoked scene. “Margaret, sit down. This is a private family matter.”

“It stopped being private when you put your hands on her.”

Several diners had raised their phones. A waiter stood near the kitchen doors, pale and uncertain. Grant noticed the recording cameras and loosened his grip slightly, but Charlotte did not lift her head.

Then I saw the purple, healing bruises hidden beneath her hairline.

I reached for my phone. Grant knocked it forcefully from my hand, sending it skidding across the polished floorboards.

Diane sighed softly. “Charlotte has been unstable for months, Margaret. She steals documents, invents wild accusations, and frightens Noah. We are simply trying to protect our grandson.”

Noah was six. Charlotte had told me he was spending the evening with a trusted sitter.

I looked directly into my daughter's tear-filled eyes. “Where is Noah, Charlotte?”

Her eyes brimmed over. “Mom, do not let them take him out of the state.”

Grant seized her wrist with a bruising force. “Enough, Charlotte.”

Charlotte suddenly pulled free with a desperate twist and shoved a small black flash drive across the white tablecloth toward me.

“He used my pediatric nursing license,” she whispered hoarsely. “Everything is on that drive.”

Grant lunged across the table to grab it.

Before his fingers could touch the plastic, the glass doors burst open. Two uniformed police officers entered, led by a sharp woman in a navy suit holding up a gold federal badge.

“Grant Mercer,” Special Agent Maya Vance called out, her voice cutting through the silent dining room. “Step away from your wife.”

Then she looked at Charlotte.

“We found your son’s backpack in an abandoned van down by the river.”
