Chapter 2 - The Secret SongMy face burned with a suffocating mix of humiliation and rage. Before I could find the words to strike back, Lucia looked past Celeste, her wide, innocent eyes fixing upon the orchestra tuning their instruments on the elevated stage.

"Mama, can I dance our song?" Lucia whispered softly, tugging at my sleeve.
My breath caught in my throat. She was referring to the private melody my mother, Rose, had taught me in her tiny, drafty dance studio in rural Massachusetts years before we lost everything. "Are you ashamed of my dancing?" Lucia asked, her lower lip trembling.
I dropped instantly to my knees on the cold marble floor, cupping her small face in my hands. "Never, my sweet girl. Never."
"Then let me show them," she said with a fierce, quiet courage that mirrored my own.

I stood back up, squaring my shoulders as I locked eyes with Celeste. "My daughter will dance. But not for your amusement—and not for your money."
The room went strangely, uncomfortably quiet. Without waiting for Celeste’s reply, I walked straight to the podium, approached the head conductor, and whispered the name of the piece into his ear.
