Chapter 7 - The Boardroom Ambush

At exactly 3:00 PM, Arthur Vance walked into the executive conference room of the Michigan Avenue corporate tower, dressed in a bespoke Italian three-piece suit, holding an alligator-skin briefcase.

"Marco!" Vance beamed with calculated charm, walking toward the head of the table with an outstretched hand. "I received the urgent board summons. Are we finalizing the commercial portfolio expansion?"

I did not stand up. I did not take his hand.

"Sit down, Arthur," I said coldly.

Vance’s smile faltered slightly. He pulled out a leather chair, setting his briefcase on the table. "Is there an issue with the third-quarter numbers?"

The frosted glass doors opened.

Jenny Reeves walked into the boardroom, wearing a tailored cream wool dress and dark heels, her dark hair cascading gracefully over her shoulders. She held Toby’s hand, the little boy looking bright, healthy, and alert in a new wool sweater.

Vance’s jaw dropped. He jumped up from his chair, pointing a trembling finger at Jenny. "What is this?! Why is this woman in an executive board meeting?!"

"She is here to collect what you stole, Arthur," I stated.

Elena Ruiz dropped a three-hundred-page red-stamped forensic binder onto the table directly in front of Vance.

"Over the past twelve months, you embezzled 2.4 million dollars in patent licensing royalties belonging to the estate of David Reeves," I announced into the silent room. "You forged probate documents, used predatory shell companies to execute illegal evictions, and intentionally deprived a five-year-old child of medical life support to force an extortion settlement."

"That's a lie!" Vance shouted, his face flushing crimson. "Those contracts were legally executed!"

"The signatures on those notes were analyzed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation's document forensic lab at ten o'clock this morning," Elena stated with razor-sharp precision. "They are certified forgeries."

Before Vance could reach for his phone, the side doors opened.

Two armed Special Agents from the FBI and two Cook County detective lieutenants stepped into the room.

"Arthur Vance," Special Agent Miller announced, displaying a federal arrest warrant. "You are under arrest for grand larceny, wire fraud, identity theft, and felony extortion."

Steel handcuffs clicked around Vance’s wrists as he was forced face-down onto the mahogany table, his arrogant facade crumbling into frantic, humiliating tears.

As they dragged Vance past Jenny’s chair, she looked at the man who had terrorized her family with unyielding, calm dignity.

The ghost that had haunted her life was finally destroyed.
