Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Breath

As the sun began to dip beneath the Chicago skyline, casting long, golden reflections across the calm blue waters of Lake Michigan, Toby came running up the stone steps.
"Marco! Look what I found!" Toby beamed, holding out a small, smooth white lake stone shaped like a heart.
"That's a keeper, buddy," I smiled, ruffling his hair.
Toby climbed onto the bench between Jenny and me, leaning his head comfortably against my side, watching the distant sailboats glide across the water.
Jenny leaned in close, resting her head against my shoulder, her fingers intertwining securely with mine.
I remembered the cold afternoon on Grover Street—a desperate mother counting twenty-dollar bills on a glass counter, willing to sacrifice her last connection to the world just so her little boy could breathe.
She had walked into my life believing she was completely powerless.
She had never known that her fierce, selfless love for her child had possessed more strength than all the money and power in the world.

I wrapped my arm around Jenny and Toby, holding them close as the warm evening breeze swept across the lake, carrying the sweet scent of blooming lilacs into the twilight sky.
The shadows of the past had completely vanished. In their place stood a future built on honor, unyielding protection, and an unbreakable love that would breathe free for generations to come.
