Chapter 3 - The Uniforms and the Suits

Grant adjusted the lapels of his tailored suit, sneering as he walked toward the foyer. "That will be the gated community patrol. Let's see how tough you are when you're being removed in handcuffs."

Evelyn picked up her wine glass, smirking victoriously. "Some mothers need to learn that their daughters belong to a new household now."

Grant swung the heavy double mahogany front doors wide open. "Officers, I have two trespassers inside my dining room refusing to—"

The words died instantly in his throat.

Standing under the grand exterior portico were not private neighborhood security guards.

Standing at the front was Daniel Ross, the seventy-two-year-old Chairman and founding CEO of Mercer Dynamics, dressed in a sharp three-piece wool suit. Flanking him were six senior members of the Mercer Dynamics Board of Directors, holding thick leather executive portfolios.

And standing right beside Chairman Ross was Police Commissioner Marcus Miller in full dress uniform, accompanied by four armed Cook County detective lieutenants and two uniformed patrol supervisors.

Behind them, three marked squad cars and an unmarked tactical command van blocked the private circular driveway with pulsing amber and red lights.

Grant stumbled backward three steps, his face draining of every ounce of blood. "Mr.... Mr. Ross? Commissioner Miller? What... what is the meaning of this? The board appointment isn't until tomorrow morning at headquarters!"

Chairman Ross looked at Grant with unvarnished, icy disgust.

"We are not here for your appointment, Grant," Ross stated, his deep voice resounding through the grand foyer. "We are here at the emergency summons of our controlling shareholder and Special Deputy State's Attorney, Victoria Sterling."

Commissioner Miller stepped past Grant without breaking stride, walking straight into the dining room where I sat holding my weeping daughter.

"Good evening, Victoria," Commissioner Miller said with deep professional respect, dipping his head slightly. "We have the forensic medical unit outside and two warrants signed by the Chief Judge."
