Chapter 2 - The Trap Snaps Shut

A suffocating silence descended over the dining room.

Grant blinked twice, his smug grin wavering for a fraction of a second before he let out a loud, mocking bark of laughter.

"Is that the kind of pathetic fantasy you tell yourself to feel important, Victoria?" Grant scoffed, shaking his head. "My father founded Mercer Dynamics thirty-five years ago. The Sterling Trust is an anonymous institutional blind pool based in Delaware. You’re just a retired municipal civil servant living on a state pension."

Evelyn chimed in, curling her lip with venomous disgust. "Claire clearly inherited her mother's delusional theatricality. Eat your dinner, Victoria, or take an Uber back to your little townhouse before you embarrass yourself further."

I didn't blink. I didn't raise my voice. I simply squeezed Claire’s hand tighter beneath the table.

"Claire," I murmured gently, turning toward her pale face. "Tell me exactly what happened to your shoulder yesterday evening."

Claire began to tremble violently. She looked across the table at Grant, who leaned forward, his dark eyes narrowing into an explicit, threatening glare.

"Choose your words very carefully, Claire," Grant warned, his voice low and menacing. "Remember what happens to ungrateful wives who forget their place."

"She asked him why four hundred thousand dollars was transferred from their joint trust into an offshore brokerage in the Cayman Islands," a quiet voice spoke from the end of the table.

Everyone turned in shock. It was Grant’s twenty-year-old sister, Megan. She sat with her hands clasped tightly in her lap, her eyes glistening with tears of shame and rebellion.

"Shut up, Megan!" Evelyn shrieked, slamming her palm against the table.

"No, Mom, I'm sick of this!" Megan yelled, standing up from her chair. "Grant threw Claire into the marble fireplace hearth because she found his hidden bank records! He stepped on her arm until her shoulder dislocated, and then he refused to let her go to the emergency room unless she told the triage nurse she fell down the deck stairs!"

The air in the dining room became ice.

Claire buried her face against my shoulder, sobbing uncontrollably as months of suppressed trauma poured out of her.

I held my daughter close, stroking her blonde hair with my left hand while my right hand rested flat on the marble table.

"You dislocated my daughter's shoulder over an embezzlement trace, Grant?" I asked, my voice carrying the lethal chill of a judge delivering a capital sentence.

Grant jumped to his feet, knocking his heavy leather armchair backward with a loud crash. "This is my house! I am the head of this family! Get out of my dining room right now, you old hag, before I have private security drag you both onto the street!"

Right at that exact second, the heavy brass chime of the front doorbell echoed through the cavernous foyer.
