Chapter 4 - The Lockdown at the GarageWhile Lucas was held in a high-security interrogation cell at the 4th Precinct, I sat in the hospital waiting room beside my daughter Sophie.

My name is Sarah Cole. I am Lucasâs wife.
For the past month, our family had lived in a nightmare. Lucas had been a master mechanic for the county transit garage for twelve years until he discovered that the transit board was buying cheap, defective brake sub-assemblies from a fraudulent shell company and pocketing millions in state safety grants.
When Lucas threatened to go to the federal inspectors, the board framed him for stealing parts, fired him, and placed a restraining order on him.
Denise Porter, the school aide on the bus, was the sister of the transit boardâs chairman.
âMom,â Sophie whispered, pulling out a hidden notebook page from her pocket. âBefore they took Dadâs jacket, he managed to slip the red flash drive into my sock while we were in the ambulance.â

I looked at the small plastic device. It was covered in Maria Alvarezâs tiny, handwritten initials.
âWe need to find out what's on this, Sophie,â I said, my heart pounding. âRight now.â
