Chapter 4 - The Light That Went DarkFor four agonizing months, I lived inside the white, sterile walls of cardiac ICU.

I learned the language of medical monitors, ejection fractions, and intravenous ionotropes. I held his hand through endless tests, wiped sweat from his forehead, and prayed to a God I hadn't spoken to since childhood.

Evan never complained. Even as his face grew pale and hollow, he spent his waking hours drawing sketches of our future house on the back of hospital napkins.

On a rainy May morning, his lead cardiologist pulled me into the hallway.

“Claire,” the doctor spoke gently, his eyes full of sorrow. “His heart is failing faster than the donor match registry can process. We are out of medical options.”

That morning over the Charles River, Evan held my cheek with his cold thumb, told me to walk toward the light, and closed his eyes forever.

When they pulled the white sheet over his face, a part of my soul died inside that hospital room.

I didn't scream. I didn't cry in public. I simply went numb, frozen in time at twenty-four years old.
