Chapter 18 - MIDNIGHT AT THE BLACK VEIL|

At 11:43 p.m., the first file appeared online.

It was a scanned report about Victor Cross's death, accompanied by a series of photographs and a statement claiming that Julian had arranged the fatal incident to inherit the family business.

Within minutes, the story began circulating among business contacts and news outlets. The report had been designed to make Julian look guilty before anyone had time to verify the documents.

Julian watched the headlines appear on his phone.

"I didn't kill my father," he said.

"I believe you."

He looked at me, surprised.

"That doesn't mean I think you're innocent of everything," I added. "It means I don't believe a document just because someone wants me to."

He gave a faint, tired smile.

"That's fair."

The investigators quickly identified inconsistencies in the report. Several dates did not match official records, and one photograph had been taken months after the incident it supposedly depicted. The evidence suggested that the file had been assembled to mislead, but the source and full purpose still needed to be established.

Julian's attorney advised him not to respond publicly until the documents had been examined.

For once, Julian agreed without argument.

At 11:57 p.m., a second file arrived.

It contained a draft of the Black Veil succession order, naming me as emergency trustee and authorizing the transfer of several companies to a holding structure controlled by Richard Cross.

The document carried what appeared to be my signature.

I had never signed it.

The authorities were notified immediately. The document was preserved, and the relevant institutions were alerted that its validity was disputed. Julian's legal team also issued a carefully worded notice explaining that no transfer should be treated as authorized solely on the basis of the circulating file.

At midnight, the final message arrived.

The protocol is active. Surrender the ledger and the girl will be released from the obligation. Refuse, and the entire Cross empire will collapse.

I stared at the screen.

"Released from what obligation?"

Julian's attorney examined the message.

"It's a threat designed to imply that the succession order is valid. It may be an attempt to pressure you into surrendering the evidence."

"Then we don't give them anything."

Julian nodded.

"We don't negotiate through threats."

He contacted the investigators and agreed to provide the original ledger and flash drive through the proper legal channels. He also authorized a complete audit of the affected companies and temporarily suspended transactions connected to the disputed trust.

The decision put his business empire at risk. Several partners withdrew from pending deals. Banks requested additional documentation. Rumors spread that the Cross organization was collapsing.

But Julian did not retaliate against the people who questioned him.

He gave them records.

He answered questions.

He let independent professionals examine the system he had once controlled without oversight.

The investigation uncovered a crucial detail in the Black Veil protocol. The emergency transfer required three valid approvals: the designated trustee, the independent custodian, and the surviving beneficiary whose rights were being affected.

My supposed signature was only one part of the process.

The other two approvals had been forged or generated through compromised credentials.

That meant the protocol could not lawfully complete the transfer on the evidence available. The attempt to activate it had instead created a trail of suspicious documents and unauthorized access.

The authorities moved to secure the remaining records.

Meanwhile, Margaret discovered that someone had entered the foundation's archive and removed several original documents. Security footage showed a person wearing a maintenance uniform, but the face was hidden.

The person had left behind a small envelope.

Inside was a photograph of Richard Cross standing beside a car.

The date on the photograph was three days earlier.

Richard was alive.

The investigators traced the vehicle to a private property near the old waterfront warehouses. They obtained the necessary authorization to search the site, where they found records connected to the Black Veil structure and a room that appeared to have been used as a temporary office.

Richard was gone.

But he had left a handwritten note on the desk.

Julian, you were never meant to inherit the empire. You were meant to protect it until the rightful owner returned.

Beneath the message was a second line.

Ask your sister what happened to Catherine's original will.

Julian turned toward Margaret.

She looked horrified.

"I don't have it," she whispered. "I have never seen it."

Then my mother entered the room.

She had been listening from the doorway.

"I have."

Everyone turned.

My mother reached into her bag and removed a thin envelope that she had kept hidden among her personal belongings for seven years.

"Catherine gave this to me before she disappeared," she said. "She told me to deliver it to Elena when the time was right."

I took the envelope.

The seal was intact.

Inside was the original will, signed by Catherine Cross and witnessed by two independent attorneys. It named me as the beneficiary of her protected shares and explicitly prohibited any transfer through the Black Veil protocol without my informed consent.

The final paragraph was handwritten.

If my daughter is ever brought into the Cross household under false pretenses, the person who arranged it must explain why.

I looked at Margaret.

She began to cry.

Then my mother added one more sentence.

"Catherine knew someone would eventually bring you into that mansion. She knew it because the person who promised to protect you was the same person who helped Victor hide her."

I stared at her.

"Who?"

My mother looked toward the open door.

"Richard Cross."

A sound came from the hallway.

A slow, deliberate clap.

We turned.

May you like

A man stood in the doorway, silver hair neatly combed, wearing a dark coat and a faint smile.

Richard Cross had come home.
