Chapter 17 - THE HEIRESS NO ONE WAS SUPPOSED TO FIND|

The next morning, Julian's attorney arrived with a team of specialists to examine the documents connected to Catherine Cross.
The declaration naming David Vale as my guardian was not enough, by itself, to establish ownership of the assets. But it provided a starting point. The legal team traced the records of Catherine's estate, the foundation, and the holding companies that had been created during Victor's lifetime.
What they found was astonishing.
Catherine had owned a significant share of the legitimate shipping business before marrying Victor. Some of those shares had been transferred into a family trust after her death. The trust documents contained restrictions intended to prevent the assets from being sold or pledged without the consent of her surviving child.
If I was Catherine's daughter, I might have legal rights to a portion of those assets.
But someone had created a series of amendments that appeared to remove the child's claim.
The amendments had been signed by a guardian whose identity was listed as David Vale.
I had never seen them.
My mother had never seen them.
And the signature did not resemble my father's handwriting.
The investigators sent the documents for examination. The preliminary assessment suggested that at least one signature might have been copied from an unrelated record. A formal conclusion would require further analysis.
Julian's attorney explained that if the amendments were invalid, the consequences could be significant. The Black Veil structure might have been designed not simply to transfer control after Julian's death, but to conceal the fact that the family's ownership rights had been restricted by Catherine's original trust.
"Someone didn't just want the company," I said. "They wanted to make sure I could never claim it."
"That's one possibility," the attorney replied. "We need to establish who created the amendments and what they knew."
The investigation had become larger than the suspicious loans and the attempt on Julian's life. It now involved a disputed inheritance, potentially false estate documents, and a corporate structure that might have been used to conceal ownership.
Julian did something unexpected.
He asked the legal team to create an independent trust to protect any assets that could belong to me, without giving him or his organization control over them. The arrangement would remain subject to legal review and would not transfer ownership before the relevant rights were established.
"I don't want you to owe me anything," he told me. "If the documents show you're entitled to something, it should be yours. If they don't, I won't try to influence the outcome."
I studied him carefully.
"Why are you doing this?"
"Because you're my sister."
"That doesn't erase what you did."
"I know."
He looked at the floor.
"I'm not asking you to forgive me. I'm trying to stop making the same choices."
I wanted to believe him. This time, however, his actions were beginning to match his words.
He had given up control of the investigation. He had disclosed the suspicious accounts. He had accepted that I would live away from the mansion. He had stopped using fear as a shortcut to obedience.
Those changes mattered.
But the danger had not disappeared.
The investigators found evidence that Arthur Bell had been using a second identity to communicate with Richard Cross. The messages suggested that Richard planned to activate Black Veil by declaring Julian permanently incapacitated and then transferring the emergency authority to the trustee.
Margaret had been named as the trustee years earlier, but the recent access logs indicated that someone had altered the designation.
The new trustee was listed as Elena Vale.
I stared at the document.
"I never agreed to this."
"That's exactly why the document is being investigated," the attorney said. "A name on a record does not establish consent."
The timing was significant. The designation had been created after my false employment reference was submitted, but before the staged attack in the mansion.
Someone had been preparing to place me at the center of a succession dispute without telling me.
Then the forensic specialist recovered a deleted file from the flash drive. It contained a draft message from Arthur to Richard.
The girl believes she came here to work. Cross believes she came here to be tested. Neither understands that her presence completes the succession condition.
A second line followed.
Once she is formally recognized as Catherine's daughter, the emergency trustee clause becomes active.
I looked at Julian.
"Does that mean they can take your company through me?"
"Not lawfully if the documents are invalid," he said. "But they may believe they can use the paperwork to create confusion, trigger a dispute, and force the banks to freeze the assets."
"Why would they want that?"
"Because a frozen company is easier to acquire than a functioning one."
The theory made sense. Richard and Arthur might have been trying to destabilize the Cross empire so they could control it through the emergency structure.
But we still didn't know where Richard was or who had ordered the gunman to fire at the Hudson Valley property.
Then an investigator called with an update.
Arthur Bell had been located at a private airfield outside Albany.
He had purchased a ticket under an alias and was preparing to leave the country.
The authorities were moving to question him.
Before they could reach the hangar, the investigator said, Arthur had sent one final message to Julian.
You have until midnight to surrender the ledger. Otherwise, Richard will release the evidence that proves you ordered your own father's murder.
Julian read the message twice.
Then he looked at me.
"He's trying to make me choose between the ledger and my name."
I shook my head.
"No. He's trying to make you choose between protecting yourself and telling the truth."
Julian's eyes met mine.
For the first time, he didn't argue.
May you like
He forwarded the message to the investigators.
And together, we waited for midnight.
