Chapter 18 - THE FALL OF THE STERLINGS|

The investigation moved quickly once the financial records were made public.

Richard Sterling’s companies were accused of concealing transfers, falsifying invoices, and helping disguise payments connected to the Ferrara shipping network. Senator Leonard Graff announced that he would cooperate with investigators, but the statement did little to calm the growing scandal.

Vivienne tried to distance herself from her husband’s business dealings.

She claimed she had known nothing about the accounts, the dockside meeting, or the threats against Sofia. Her attorneys described the wine incident as an unfortunate misunderstanding and argued that the social media campaign against Sofia had been driven by anonymous individuals.

But the evidence did not disappear.

The recording of Vivienne threatening Sofia about Mateo’s medical information was authenticated. Hospital records confirmed that someone had accessed the account without authorization. Investigators also found messages between a Sterling Foundation consultant and a security contractor later linked to the attempted kidnapping.

The messages did not prove Vivienne had ordered the abduction, but they contradicted her claim that she had no knowledge of the effort to intimidate Sofia.

Richard Sterling was arrested on financial charges after investigators found additional records in a private office. Salvatore Ferrara was taken into custody when he attempted to leave the country using documents that did not match his identity.

Senator Graff resigned from his committee positions while the investigation continued.

Vivienne was not immediately charged with every allegation circulating in the press. Some accusations remained unproven, and the authorities distinguished between evidence of her own conduct and rumors about the wider scheme.

That distinction mattered to Sofia.

She had watched powerful people destroy reputations with careless accusations. She did not want to become one of them.

At a public hearing, Sofia testified about the gala, the threat against Mateo, and the conversation she had recorded with Vivienne. Her voice shook at first, but she continued without embellishment.

When an attorney asked whether she had exaggerated the incident to gain attention, Sofia looked directly at him.

“I lost my job because I refused to ignore someone being humiliated. I didn’t know who her son was. I didn’t know his name would become part of a criminal investigation. I only knew that an elderly woman was frightened and that people were laughing at her.”

“Yet you later accepted employment from Mr. Ferrara.”

“I accepted a job helping his mother. I negotiated my hours, my pay, and my right to leave. I also reported threats to the authorities.”

“Did you develop a personal relationship with him?”

Sofia paused.

“Yes.”

“Did that influence your testimony?”

“No. My testimony concerns what I saw, what I heard, and what I can prove.”

Her answer was simple.

It was also the truth.

After the hearing, Eleanor waited for Sofia outside the building. The older woman wore a pale blue coat and carried a small bouquet of white roses.

“You were brave,” Eleanor said.

“I was nervous.”

“Bravery and nervousness can live in the same person.”

Sofia smiled.

Eleanor handed her the flowers.

“I wanted to thank you properly. Not because you saved my reputation. Because you reminded me that I was still a person, even when I had forgotten where I belonged.”

Sofia’s eyes filled.

“You never stopped being a person.”

Eleanor embraced her.

Across the street, Dante watched them from beside a parked car. He had been advised not to attend the hearing, but he had come anyway, remaining outside so Sofia could speak without feeling that she needed to defend him.

When she approached, he opened the passenger door.

“How did it go?” he asked.

“I told the truth.”

“That’s all anyone can ask.”

Sofia looked at him.

“No. It’s what everyone should do.”

He smiled faintly.

“You’re right.”

As they drove away, Dante received a message from the investigator.

Salvatore had agreed to speak.

He claimed he could identify the person who had ordered Marco’s disappearance.

But he would only talk if Dante met him in person.
