Chapter 15 - THE GALA THAT CHANGED MANHATTAN|

The kidnapping transformed the investigation.

The authorities now had evidence of intimidation, forged medical paperwork, and a coordinated attempt to obstruct a financial inquiry. The case was no longer confined to old corporate records or uncertain memories from a dockside accident.

It involved a living victim.

Mateo recovered under hospital supervision, with his privacy protected by a formal security arrangement. Sofia stayed with him for two nights, refusing to leave until he could sleep without waking at every sound.

Dante visited once, bringing a small box of pastries from a bakery near the hospital.

Mateo eyed him suspiciously.

“Is this a bribe?”

Dante placed the box on the table.

“It’s breakfast.”

“Those are pastries.”

“Then it’s a breakfast with ambition.”

Mateo laughed despite himself.

Sofia watched the exchange, surprised by how carefully Dante kept his distance. He did not offer to pay for everything. He did not make promises about what he could control. He simply asked Mateo what he needed and listened to the answer.

When Mateo finally returned home, Sofia agreed to accompany Dante to a public charity event hosted by the Monroe Foundation.

She did not go as his employee.

She went because the foundation’s board had requested a meeting about the gala incident, the hospital privacy breach, and the allegations surrounding the Sterling companies. The event would be attended by donors, reporters, medical representatives, and several officials already involved in the inquiry.

Vivienne would be there.

So would Senator Graff.

Dante offered Sofia the option of staying away.

“I’m not hiding,” she replied.

“I didn’t ask you to.”

“You were thinking it.”

“I was thinking that you’ve already endured enough.”

Sofia adjusted the sleeve of her simple black dress.

“I decide what I can endure.”

Dante nodded.

“Then I’ll stand beside you, if you want me to.”

She looked at him.

“I do.”

The ballroom was crowded when they arrived. Conversations faltered as Dante entered, but the whispers grew louder when Sofia walked beside him.

Some guests recognized her from the viral photographs. Others looked at her dress and shoes, trying to calculate whether she belonged.

Vivienne stood near the stage, surrounded by donors.

When she saw Sofia, she excused herself and approached them.

“How brave of you to return.”

“How brave of you to show your face,” Sofia replied.

Vivienne’s smile tightened.

“You’ve made a terrible mistake by involving yourself in matters you don’t understand.”

“Then explain them.”

“Your little performance at the last gala was unfortunate, but you don’t need to ruin your future because of one emotional moment.”

Sofia held her gaze.

“You threatened my brother.”

Vivienne’s expression changed.

“Keep your voice down.”

“No.”

A nearby conversation stopped.

Sofia continued, her voice steady.

“You used your influence to spread lies about me. Someone accessed my brother’s private medical information. Then he was taken from his hospital room and used as leverage to stop an investigation.”

Vivienne glanced toward the crowd.

“You have no proof I ordered any of that.”

“You’re right,” Sofia said. “That’s why I gave the evidence to the authorities instead of making accusations I couldn’t support.”

Dante watched her with quiet pride.

Vivienne turned to him.

“Are you really allowing a waitress to speak for your family?”

Dante stepped forward.

“She speaks for herself.”

The words carried across the nearby tables.

Senator Graff approached, wearing a polished smile.

“This is a charitable event, Mr. Ferrara. Perhaps we should avoid turning it into a spectacle.”

Dante looked at him.

“You had an opportunity to prevent a vulnerable woman from being humiliated here. Instead, you laughed. Then someone connected to your associates threatened a hospital patient.”

Graff’s smile vanished.

“I have no knowledge of any such thing.”

“Then you should have no objection to cooperating with the investigation.”

For the first time, the senator appeared uncertain.

The foundation’s director stepped onto the stage and announced that the board had requested an independent review of its donor relationships and the events surrounding the previous gala. She thanked Sofia for bringing attention to the treatment of vulnerable guests and staff.

The applause began hesitantly, then spread.

Vivienne stood rigid beside the stage.

Sofia did not smile at her. She did not need to.

The room that had laughed at Eleanor was now listening to the woman they had dismissed as insignificant.

But as Sofia turned toward the exit, a stranger slipped a folded note into her hand.

She opened it beneath the lights.
