Chapter 12 - THE MAN WHO CAME BACK FROM THE DEAD|

The investigators located the warehouse through an old shipping manifest.

It sat near the edge of the port, behind a row of abandoned loading buildings. The property had changed ownership several times, but the taxes were still being paid by a company connected to Peter Voss.

Audrey remained in the command vehicle while officers entered.

She watched the live camera feed.

A dark corridor.

A metal staircase.

An empty office.

Then a man appeared at the far end.

Daniel Bell.

He was thinner than the photograph Sofia had shown her. His beard was untrimmed, and he walked with a slight limp. But he was alive.

An officer guided him outside.

Sofia was waiting near the perimeter. When she saw her brother, she covered her mouth.

“Daniel.”

He stared at her.

For a moment, neither moved.

Then he pulled her into his arms.

Audrey watched the reunion through the windshield.

Some losses could be repaired. Others could only be acknowledged.

Daniel was brought to the command vehicle.

“Mrs. Keane,” he said, “thank you for believing Sofia.”

“I didn't do much.”

“You gave her a reason to keep going.”

He handed the investigators a small metal case.

“The ledger is inside. There are also recordings and a list of payments.”

“Who has been controlling everything?” Audrey asked.

“Peter Voss. He used Ronin's name because people were afraid of him. Victor handled the operations. Douglas handled the foundation.”

“And Celeste?”

“She was recruited to get close to Ronin and collect information. But she started keeping copies.”

“Why?”

Daniel glanced at Sofia.

“She realized Peter planned to eliminate everyone who could identify him.”

Audrey looked toward the warehouse.

“Where is Douglas?”

“Gone.”

“Did he take the ledger?”

“No. He tried. I moved it before he arrived.”

An investigator opened the case.

Inside were account books, photographs, and a small audio recorder.

Daniel continued.

“There is one recording you should hear.”

The investigator pressed play.

Peter Voss's voice filled the vehicle.

“Ronin is becoming a problem. He's too attached to his wife. If she learns about the port transfers, he'll choose her over the family.”

Victor answered.

“Then remove her.”

“No. Not yet. The child is useful. The foundation trust can be transferred through the child once Audrey is declared unable to manage her affairs.”

Audrey felt her blood turn cold.

The recording continued.

“What about Ronin?”

Peter's answer was simple.

“He can keep his title until the papers are signed. After that, he won't matter.”

The investigator stopped the recording.

Audrey stared at the dashboard.

“They were planning to take my child.”

“Yes,” Daniel said.

“Who would control the trust?”

“Peter.”

“Why would he need my signature?”

“Because the foundation's legal structure gives you authority over the charitable assets. Without your approval, the transfer could be challenged.”

Miriam looked at the ledger.

“Then we have the evidence.”

Daniel shook his head.

“Not all of it.”

He reached into his coat and removed a folded sheet.

“This is the final transfer instruction. It names the person who was supposed to take control after Ronin was removed.”

Audrey read the name.

Douglas Prentiss.

She looked up.

“Where is he?”

Daniel glanced toward the port.

“He's waiting for Peter at the private terminal.”

An investigator's radio crackled.

“Movement at the north gate. Black sedan approaching.”

Daniel went pale.

“That's him.”

The vehicle stopped.

The rear door opened.

And Peter Voss stepped out, smiling as though he had been invited.
