Chapter 8 - When Logan’s Own Family Turned Against Him

Marco wanted me confused.

It worked.

For ten minutes.

Then I stopped.

Evidence only.

We arranged no secret meeting.

Police.

Attorneys.

DNA.

Adrian agreed to test.

So did I.

Result:

Adrian Parker was my biological father.

Marco lied.

Simple.

Useful.

That taught me something.

Not every twist deserves belief.

Some are only weapons.

Marco called again.

I answered with investigators listening.

“You lied.”

“So did Elena.”

“Maybe. But not about that.”

Silence.

He sounded disappointed.

“You've become difficult.”

“I work with six-year-olds.”

Logan almost smiled.

Marco wanted immunity arrangement.

In exchange for evidence against old Parker and Moretti operations.

He claimed Logan’s father ordered Martin Bell to kill Elena.

Another attempt to redirect.

Could be partly true.

We checked.

Money trail led from Marco-controlled account.

Not father.

Adrian finally came to Boston voluntarily.

Sophia refused to see him.

Fair.

I met him.

My biological father.

He looked like me around eyes.

I hated noticing.

He sat across table.

“I’m sorry.”

“No.”

He stopped.

“I don't want apology first.”

“What do you want?”

“Facts.”

He told them.

Seventeen-year-old Elena.

Party.

Alcohol.

He was twenty-two.

She said no.

He ignored.

He did not soften it.

“I assaulted her.”

The sentence nearly made me sick.

He looked down.

“I spent my life calling it misunderstanding because the correct word made me unbearable to myself.”

I stared.

“You don't get points for saying it now.”

“I know.”

Good.

“Did you know about me?”

“Yes.”

“All my life?”

“No. After birth.”

“You let me be adopted.”

“Elena wanted you away from us.”

“Reasonably.”

He nodded.

“Did you kill her?”

“No.”

“Did you threaten her?”

“Yes.”

“What did you say?”

“That if she exposed me, I would destroy her reputation.”

Cowardly.

Ugly.

Honest.

“Did Marco know?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Years later.”

“How did he react?”

“Badly.”

Marco’s identity had been built around being Adrian’s heir.

When he learned Adrian had a biological daughter, he became obsessed.

Not because law guaranteed anything.

Because family had taught him blood equals legitimacy.

Same poison in different mansion.

Adrian looked toward Logan.

“I warned you once about Marco.”

Logan frowned.

“When?”

“After Elena died.”

“You said he was unstable.”

“Yes.”

“I thought you meant drugs.”

“No.”

Again.

Ambiguous warnings.

Adults afraid of truth.

Then federal investigators entered.

They had found Marco.

Not arrested.

Dead?

No.

Hospitalized after car crash while fleeing surveillance.

Alive.

Conscious.

He requested attorney.

Good.

No melodrama.

Court could handle him.

But then another betrayal surfaced.

Parker board.

While Logan was distracted, three directors invoked emergency succession clause.

Temporary control transferred to Adrian.

Not because Adrian requested.

Because Marco had prepared medical evidence suggesting Logan was mentally unstable after wife’s death and daughter’s illness.

Forged psychiatric assessments.

Again paperwork.

Adrian could accept.

Or refuse.

He looked at Logan.

Then signed refusal.

That mattered.

Board scrambled.

Without Adrian, authority reverted.

Logan retained control.

Then he did something nobody expected.

He resigned as CEO.

I stared.

“Why?”

“Because Elena asked me not to become my father.”

“That doesn't require resigning.”

“No.”

He looked toward Sophia’s room.

“But I need to be her father for a while.”

For first time, he chose person over empire before crisis forced him.

I respected that.

He appointed independent interim board.

External audit.

Opened old operations to federal review.

Vincent supported.

Several executives quit.

Good.

Adrian surrendered records linking himself to old crimes.

Bribery.

Illegal shipments.

He accepted prosecution risk.

Not redemption.

Responsibility.

Marco eventually faced charges for fraud, kidnapping, medical-record falsification, conspiracy relating to Elena’s death, and financial crimes.

Martin Bell was found alive in Belize.

He confessed to tampering with Elena’s brakes for money.

Marco ordered it.

There was no dramatic ambiguity left.

Truth became boring.

Documents.

Dates.

Transfers.

That felt better.

Sophia’s treatment changed to correct protocol.

Her counts improved.

Slowly.

No miracle.

Real medicine.

Hard days.

Hair loss.

Nausea.

Fear.

But also progress.

One afternoon, she said:

“Emma, are you my sister?”

I froze.

Logan had wanted to tell her carefully.

Therapist involved.

But children rarely wait for ideal timing.

I sat beside her.

“Yes.”

She thought.

“Big sister?”

“Yes.”

“Very big.”

I gasped.

“Rude.”

She smiled.

A real smile.

Then:

“Mama your mama?”

“Yes.”

She touched my hand.

“You sad?”

“Yes.”

“Me too.”

We sat.

No fixing.

Just truth.

Then she leaned against me.

May you like

“Sing.”

So I did.
