Chapter 7 - The Recording Behind the Butterfly Books

Marco Moretti entered the United States three days before Sophia disappeared.
Passport records confirmed it.
No one knew.
He rented a car under a corporate account linked to Moretti Biomedical.
He had medical access.
Family access.
DNA motive.
Money motive.
And perhaps hatred.
But motive isn't proof.
We searched the summer house.
Sophia returned to estate with police protection.
No more hidden-camera-only security.
Everything independent now.
She slept in my room.
Logan allowed it.
Actually, Sophia demanded it.
“Emma stay.”
Three words.
He nodded.
At 3:00 a.m., she woke.
“Book.”
“What book?”
“Butterfly.”
We went to her room.
She pointed at bookshelf.
Behind books, not passage.
Small recorder taped underneath shelf.
My heart pounded.
“Who put this?”
“Mama.”
Elena.
Of course.
Everything dead women need to say eventually becomes hidden media in these stories of rich families. But this one felt painfully real because Elena had known walls were unsafe.
We called Logan before touching it.
Independent investigator collected.
Then played copy.
Elena’s voice.
“Sophia, if you ever find this when you're older…”
She laughed softly.
“I hope you don't remember needing it.”
Logan sat down.
Sophia leaned against me.
Elena continued.
“Logan, if you hear this, I'm sorry.”
His face broke slightly.
“I should have told you everything.”
She explained Adrian.
The assault.
The baby.
Me.
Her search.
Then something unexpected.
“Adrian did not kill me.”
We all froze.
She had recorded this before death.
How could she know?
She continued.
“He threatened me, yes. He begged me not to tell Emma or Logan because DNA would expose him. But he is not the person I’m afraid of.”
Logan leaned closer.
“Marco is.”
There.
Adrian’s son.
Elena said Marco discovered truth years earlier.
He believed I was a threat to inheritance.
If Adrian’s assault became public, scandal could strip him from leadership positions and trigger trust clauses.
More importantly, DNA could show that Marco’s own parentage had been misrepresented.
What?
Elena explained.
Marco was not Adrian’s biological son.
He was adopted privately after Adrian’s wife suffered miscarriages.
Only family trust treated him as biological because records had been manipulated.
My existence—Adrian’s biological child—could supersede Marco in certain ancient family holdings.
I laughed in disbelief.
“I don't want their money.”
No one cared.
Systems care about what paperwork says, not what people want.
Elena had discovered Marco altered Moretti Biomedical records before.
Not Sophia’s yet.
Earlier financial health records.
He was brilliant.
Quiet.
Patient.
Then:
“If something happens to me, look at Logan’s security contractor in Providence.”
We did.
Contractor name:
M. Bell Security.
Vincent Bell?
He frowned.
“My brother.”
Another Bell.
Martin Bell.
Worked private automotive security.
The night Elena died, Marco paid Martin to tamper with vehicle.
Vincent had unknowingly inspected car before tampering occurred.
Sofia followed Elena.
Adrian argued.
Everyone supplied confusion.
Marco used it.
Elena died.
Martin disappeared six months later.
Presumed dead.
No body.
Again.
Logan looked sick.
Vincent looked worse.
“My brother.”
“You didn't know?”
“No.”
“I believe you.”
That surprised him.
Why?
Evidence.
Not instinct.
Elena’s recording continued.
“I found Emma.”
My breath stopped.
“I know her name.”
She said it.
Emma Foster.
My name in my dead mother’s voice.
I cried before she finished.
“She works with children.”
A soft laugh.
“Of course she does.”
My chest cracked.
“She looks happy.”
Elena had watched me from a distance.
Outside the hospital.
There was a photograph attached.
Me leaving work.
Coffee.
Tired.
Laughing with coworker.
She had been there.
“I want to meet her.”
Elena’s voice shook.
“But I don't know whether I have the right.”
I pressed hand to mouth.
Sophia looked at me.
“Mama.”
“Yes.”
I cried openly.
“Yes.”
The final part changed everything.
“Marco knows where Emma works.”
Silence.
“If I die, he may leave her alone if he believes she knows nothing.”
That explained thirty-one years of silence becoming suddenly dangerous only when I entered Parker estate and sang the lullaby.
The song revealed who I was.
To Logan.
To Sophia.
And maybe to anyone still watching hidden feeds.
Marco realized I had entered the family.
He moved.
Altered Sophia’s treatment.
Tried to destabilize Logan.
Framed Adrian.
Used Vincent.
Kidnapped Sophia.
Not because of money alone.
Because truth had finally assembled itself in one house.
Then Elena said:
“Logan, don't become your father trying to protect Sophia.”
He closed his eyes.
“Don't lock her inside fear.”
He cried then.
Quiet.
No hiding.
Sophia climbed into his lap.
He held her.
I looked away.
Let them have moment.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown.
I answered.
A man’s voice.
Italian accent.
“Emma.”
My blood went cold.
“Marco.”
He laughed softly.
“So they finally found the recorder.”
“Where are you?”
“Close.”
“What do you want?”
“You.”
Logan stood.
I raised one hand.
“Why?”
“Because you are the mistake no one was supposed to find.”
I looked at Sophia.
No.
I would not let fear decide.
“What happens if I come?”
“Truth.”
“I already have it.”
“No.”
Marco’s voice softened.
“You have Elena’s version.”
“What’s yours?”
Silence.
Then:
“She lied about one thing.”
May you like
“What?”
“Adrian isn't your father.”
