Chapter 19 - THE FINAL CONFESSION|

Daniel was taken into federal custody.

Vanessa survived the gunshot, though the injury required emergency surgery. Lucy was treated for a bruised cheek and released later that morning.

Ethan returned to the hospital where Richard was recovering.

His father looked weaker than before.

"Daniel told me something," Ethan said.

Richard closed his eyes.

"Then he told you the truth."

"Who ordered my mother's death?"

Richard was silent.

Ethan leaned forward.

"Was it you?"

His father looked at him.

"Yes."

The answer was quiet.

It was also devastating.

Ethan stood.

"Why?"

"Your mother found the ledger. She planned to give it to federal investigators. She believed she could destroy the family and walk away."

"So you killed her?"

"I ordered her disappearance. I never wanted her dead."

"But she died."

Richard nodded.

"Daniel changed the plan."

Ethan's hands trembled.

"You let me believe she had died in an accident."

"I thought it was better."

"Better for whom?"

Richard had no answer.

Ethan turned toward the window.

His entire childhood had been built around a lie. His mother had been taken. His sister had been hidden. His brother had been raised as a weapon. His wife had been imprisoned beneath his home. His children had been separated from her.

And he had spent six months believing Claire had abandoned him.

"Why keep the family together?" he asked.

Richard looked at him.

"Because I thought power would protect us."

"It destroyed us."

Richard's eyes filled.

"Yes."

He reached for Ethan's hand.

"There's something else. Your mother left a letter for you."

He pointed toward the bedside drawer.

Ethan found an envelope with his name written across it.

Inside was a short letter.

My dear Ethan,

If you are reading this, then you have finally learned what your father did. I am sorry I could not protect you from him. I am sorry I left you believing that love was something you had to earn through obedience.

You were never meant to inherit his empire. You were meant to build a life beyond it.

Protect your family. But do not become the person who hurt them.

Love, Mom.

Ethan read it twice.

Then he folded the letter and placed it inside his jacket.

Richard began crying.

"I wanted you to be strong."

Ethan looked at him.

"Strength isn't what you taught me."

He walked toward the door.

Behind him, Richard called his name.

"Ethan."

He stopped.

"Can you forgive me?"

Ethan looked back.

"Not today."

Then he left.

Outside, Claire was waiting with Amelia and Noah.

Lucy stood beside them, holding a small paper bag.

"What's that?" Ethan asked.

She smiled shyly.

"Your wife asked me to bring something."

Claire opened the bag.

Inside was the old platinum wedding ring.

The ring that had first emerged from beneath the floor.

Ethan took it and turned it over.

The inscription was still there.

Forever, even when the world turns against us.

Claire looked at him.

"I want to wear it again."

He placed it on her finger.

But before he could speak, Claire's phone rang.

It was Claire Donovan.

"We have a problem," the investigator said.

Ethan frowned.

"What now?"

"We recovered the original ledger from Daniel's private office. There's a final page that doesn't match the rest."

"What does it say?"

A pause.

Then the investigator answered.

"Your father wasn't the only person who signed the orders."

Claire looked at Ethan.

"Who else?"

May you like

The investigator lowered her voice.

"Your name is on it."
